David Shephard was the son of divorced parents Jack Shephard and Juliet Burke (whom he lived with), in the flash sideways. He was a gifted pianist. His relationship with Jack was strained, due to their misconstrued expectations of each other.
In this timeline, Jack has married and divorced Juliet, and had a son with her named David. As we see from Jack's interactions with David, the two have a distant relationship that is eerily similar to Jack's relationship with his own father, Christian.
When the Oceanic Six made it to the mainland, Kate presented Aaron as her son to the public.

In 2007, Jack learned of the death of "Jeremy Bentham" by reading a newspaper clipping. He attended a viewing at a funeral home, and was the only mourner.
At Christian Shephard's memorial service, Carole Littleton, who has recovered from her coma, tells Jack she and Christian had a relationship which produced Claire, revealing her to be Jack's half-sister. Eventually, before departing to return to the island, Kate reveals to Carole that Aaron is Claire's son.
The coffin was for Christian but Christian's body was not placed on the plane, this being forbidden, as explained by the airline employee. The coffin was for Christian and Jack found a way to get his father's body in it on the plane despite the formal interdiction.
She tells Jack about her affair with his father and their daughter, Claire, causing Jack to finally realise his relation to Claire. Claire herself learned of this sometime during the three years she spent alone on the Island, as, upon Jack's return, she greeted him as "my brother".
Off-island, Jack learned he was the child's uncle, and he initially refused to see him. He eventually changed his mind, and he helped raise Aaron. He read to the boy from the same book his father had read to him years before. He and Kate later broke up, and Kate said Aaron missed his presence.
After three years, Kate returns and Sawyer's old feelings seem to resurface once again. However, Kate declares her love for Jack and they reunite in the finale. Despite the hints of Sawyer having feelings for Kate, Sawyer's true love is Juliet and he reunites with her in the end.
Though supposedly "infected" beyond redemption, she helped the other survivors upon their return, and she escaped with them, planning to return to Aaron off-island. In the flash-sideways, she gave birth to Aaron anew, and they moved on together with their friends.

However, a fiery car crash occurs on the bridge before he jumps and he goes to the victims; it is eventually revealed that the driver crashed after being distracted by Jack.
