1471 is always active and useful even if you have an answering machine. Dialling 1471 without using Call Return is free. The Call Return feature of 1471 costs a fixed fee of 7.5p. The fee will apply when you press 3 to return your last caller's call.
If you're not withholding your number permanently, you can use 141 to withhold your number on a call-by-call basis. Just dial 141 followed by the number you want to call.
Last Caller ID: dial 1471
And when you've listened to their phone number, you can press 3 to call back the Last Caller. If this isn't working for you, it could be because they withheld their number or their call went to voicemail.
It's free to use 1471 to find out the last number that called. If you press '3' to return the call there's a 35p charge plus the cost of the call.
This is the same system used on landlines but it also works on mobiles. It was first introduced to stop people getting your number when they dialled 1471.
I have dialled 1471 but the number is not available? This means that the caller has withheld their number.
Use *67 to hide your phone number
Open your phone's keypad and dial * - 6 - 7, followed by the number you're trying to call. The free process hides your number, which will show up on the other end as “Private” or “Blocked” when reading on caller ID.
Beaming's 1471 Call Return service tells you the last number that called – unless the caller withheld their number by dialling 141 before dialling your number. 1471 Call Return also lets you return the call straight away, by pressing 3. 1471 is always active and useful even if you have an answering machine.
By dialling 1471, you can find out who called you last. Unfortunately, you can't disable the 1471 feature on your landline. However, you can conceal the number of your last incoming call. To do this, simply dial 1475 and follow the instructions.
Does BT 1471 (Caller Return) update when a call is answered by BT Answer 1571? BT 1471 will update in the normal way if: BT Answer 1571 picks up the call when there is no reply. you have Call Waiting active and are engaged on a call but choose not to take the second call.
Call return (*69) automatically dials your last incoming call, whether the call was answered, unanswered or busy. Call within 30 minutes, during which you can still make and receive calls.
22/11/1994 – Caller Display Introduced
Either by a caller display unit or telephone, or by using the 1471 service. The service was originally set to be introduced on 5th November 1994 but was delayed until 22 November 1994 because of privacy concerns.
Using Last Call Return
Lift the receiver and dial *69 (or 1169 for rotary phones). Listen for the number of the last call received.
Australia: 1831 on landlines and mobile phones, or #31# from a mobile. United Kingdom, Ireland, Isle of Man, and Channel Islands: 141 on landlines and #31# on mobiles.
Use reverse lookups
There are a fair few websites that offer reverse lookup services. All you need to do is type in the number and it will provide you with the details if they have them. While some of these sites are free to use, the vast majority of useful ones you will have to pay for.
If you need to mask your number on a more long-term basis for anybody who calls or texts you, we suggest using a second phone number app. These types of apps, like the Burner phone app, allow you to create a second phone number and use it as if it were your “real” number.
Whitepages.com is one of the most accurate options for landlines, but not all the information is free. Go to www.whitepages.com to see your options for a reverse address search or reverse lookup on a phone number. Addresses.com and Anywho.com are two other sites that do free reverse phone number searches for landlines.
Private numbers, blocked, and restricted calls can usually be traced. However, unknown, unavailable or out of area calls are not traceable because they don't contain the data needed for a successful trace.
In Australia, dial *10# if you get phone service through Telstra. If you get service through Optus, dial *69 on a landline. On a cell phone, dial 321 to access your voicemail, press 6 at the end of your voicemail message, then dial # to call the last number back.
Enter *67. Enter the number you wish to call (including area code). Tap Call. The words "Private," "Anonymous," or some other indicator will appear on the recipient's phone instead of your mobile number.

Carriers use a ghost number as a temporary placeholder when you are porting in a number from another carrier. It is a real number, just temporary.
