Sometimes, a good cry in labor is helpful and even therapeutic. But if the crying is attached to a larger fear and is not addressed, it can cause increased tension and even a stall in labor.
And contrary to popular belief, a silent (or mostly silent) birth is possible (even if you're not a Scientologist!). “I've seen patients who are able to handle their labors very well and have a very peaceful and placid environment throughout their labor and delivery,” Dr. Nageotte says.
With no epidural or narcotics on board, most birthing parents rate active-phase labor a 10 on the pain scale of 1 to 10. With pain management techniques taught in childbirth education, however, laboring parents can greatly reduce the intensity of the pain they experience.

Transition phase of labor

A study in Norway of over 2,200 women concluded that women who were afraid of birth were in labour longer than women who were unafraid. Researchers found women with a fear of childbirth spend 1 hour and 32 minutes longer in labour than women without fears of childbirth.
You may start to feel pressure in your vagina or pelvis. “This may be due to 'lightening,' which is when the baby drops down from the abdomen. Some women feel lightening as pelvic pressure or even low back pain,” says Dr. Emery.

Benefits of laboring in water
A positive birth experience: Women who have labored or given birth in water say they had less pain and a greater sense of control. Less pain medication: Some studies show that women who labor in water need less pain medication and may have a shorter first stage of labor.
But if you're close to 10 centimeters dilated the research suggests it's not an issue. Evidence suggests it's more of a theoretical fear that just adds additional stress and in some cases results in an epidural (or a higher dose of epidural) to mask that urge.

Your cervix needs to open about 10cm for your baby to pass through it. This is what's called being fully dilated. In a 1st pregnancy, the time from the start of established labour to being fully dilated is usually 8 to 18 hours.
A bloody show is a common symptom during late pregnancy when a small amount of blood and mucus is released from the vagina. A bloody show occurs because the cervix starts to soften and thin (efface) and widen (dilate) in preparation for labor. When your cervix dilates, it's making room for your baby to pass through.
