Worms don't sleep on a day/night schedule like mammals. Instead, their sleep-like behavior occurs at specific stages during development; the worms enter this state each time they transition from one larval stage to another.
Elephants, cats, flies, and even worms sleep. It is a natural part of many animals' lives. New research from Caltech takes a deeper look at sleep in the tiny roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans, or C. elegans, finding three chemicals that collectively work together to induce sleep.
Nightcrawler earthworms are light-sensitive, so they burrow back under the soil in daylight. Because of that, they will come up to the ground at night. This is why fisherman will scour their backyard ground during nighttime and after a good rain (usually when there's dew on the grass).
Within the soil the earthworms form a mucus-lined chamber, in which they curl into a tight ball in order to prevent moisture loss. They remain in these chambers until more favourable soil conditions prevail. If earthworms do 'sleep', it must be during such times when all other behaviours cease.
The worm may be seen around the anus or on the child's bottom. It is especially active at night or early morning. Rarely, the pinworm is seen on the surface of a stool. The pinworm's secretions are a strong skin irritant and cause the itching.
Rule #3: Target watering 1-2 times per week. Watering daily or multiple times per week is not normally required. In many cases you can water every week or so - it depends on temperature, humidity, and other factors so monitor the bin and if you see it getting dry give it a good misting or spray.
Worms require a moist, dark environment in order to survive. Experiement #3 – Which surface will worms prefer? Collect the flashlights and give each group a dry paper towel. Instruct them to place their worms so that they are half on the wet surface and half on the dry surface.

When soils get dry, earthworms go into estivation. "During estivation, earthworms wrap their bodies into a tight knot to reduce the amount of surface area exposed to the soil," explains Jacob McDaniel, lead author of the study published in the September-October issue of Soil Science Society of America Journal.
The eggs can then be spread via bed linen, bathroom fittings and other items, even food. The eggs can survive for around 2 weeks like this on surfaces. Some other types of worms enter humans when their larvae penetrate the skin, often through bare feet.
“They all have a sense of direction (forward and backward), and they can sense light, but not with eyes; heat; moisture; chemicals; and touch,” said Mark Siddall, curator in the division of invertebrate zoology at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.
All day they move about looking for food and a comfort zone in soil. Earthworms do not have lungs, rather they breathe through the surface of their skin which needs to stay moist to facilitate oxygen absorption. So they move to different depths and locations depending on the moisture content of your soil.
They might sense something, but it is not painful and does not compromise their well-being."
This caused the worms to pause their normal growth and enter what scientists call a “dauer state.” “Basically, if immature worms sense stress of any kind they can temporarily halt their normal growth for months and then restart it when the stress passes.
Hands off!
Pet worms are best watched, not played with and touched. It hurts a worm to be handled by your hands because they are designed to live in the soil. If you have to move your worm from one place to another, be very gentle and try to move it with a little soil around it to protect it from your hands.
Threadworms live about 5-6 weeks in the gut, and then die. However, before they die the female worms lay tiny eggs around the anus. This tends to be at night when you are warm and still in bed.
Symptoms and Causes
Symptoms of a pinworm infection (enterobiasis) include: Anal itching, especially at night: Pinworms lay their eggs around the anus at night, causing itching and irritation.
Eggs may be inhaled from the air or deposited onto food and swallowed. Pinworms can survive up to two weeks on clothing, bedding or other objects, if kept at room temperature.
If an annelid is cut in two, they can regenerate to some degree, and in some species you can even end up with two worms. The common earthworm, however, will only regenerate from the tail end; the head end always dies.

Worms can live as long as four years. When worms die in the bin, their bodies decompose and are recycled by other worms, along with the food scraps. Worm castings are toxic to live worms.
Water makes up more than 75% of the earthworm's body weight, so moist soils are preferred to prevent dehydration. Earthworms acclimate quickly by moving to humid sites or by entering a resting state.
Grass clippings are a great addition to a traditional compost pile and worms will eat these as well in their natural setting, but in your vermicomposting system, they will heat up the soil and can kill all of your worms.
Moisture Worms move by squeezing muscles around their water- filled bodies. They also need water to keep their skin moist for breathing. Food When feeding your worms, bury the food at least 3 inches deep in the bedding.
