Professor Elgar says that the research comparing size and age-related mortality in dogs shows that larger dogs die younger because they age significantly faster than smaller dogs.
The average lifespan for small dog breeds ranges from 10 to 15 years, with some breeds living as long as 18 years. In general, small dogs live longer than their larger counterparts, with the shortest living breeds still exceeding the average lifespan of most large breeds.
The larger the dog, the shorter their life expectancy. A large dog like a Saint Bernard will have a lifespan of between five to eight years, while smaller breeds can generally live as long as 12 to 15 years.
"We believe the relationship between a dog's body size and their lifespan may be caused by an evolutionary lag in the body's cancer defenses, which are unable to keep up with the rapid and recent selective breeding of bigger dogs," he said.
Flat-faced dog breeds, including French Bulldogs and Pugs, have the shortest life expectancy, a new study has found. In Dr. Urfer's study, small dogs had a longer median lifespan at 14.95 years, medium-size dogs lived an average of 13.86 years, and large dogs lived 13.38 years. The dog's body size was the most important variable in predicting lifespan, more important than whether or not the dog was purebred.
Small breed dogs, such as Chihuahuas, Poodles and Yorkshire Terriers, tend to be less active. However, those little canines still need daily exercise to maintain optimal health. Regular walks could help prevent aggression, anxiety, fear and hyperactivity.
