Yes, most scars look better over time as they mature, typically flattening, softening, and fading from red to a paler, less noticeable color, a process that can take 12 to 18 months or even longer, though they rarely disappear completely and proper sun protection is crucial for minimizing discoloration.
While scars never completely go away, most will fade over time. Unfortunately, some scars can remain more prominent. The appearance of a scar can be affected by the severity of the wound, the treatment received for the wound, location on the body, age of the person, and genetics.
Scar Process
It will take six to 18 months for the scar to have its final appearance. Your scar should gradually soften and fade over these six to 18 months, but will look pink initially (photo B). Some scars never fade. If your scar stays pink after 12 to 18 months please call to discuss options.
The scar will tend to remain red for 1-6 months afterwards. After that as the collagen, fibers and scar organizes and matures, the scar tends to contract down and flatten out. The color becomes less red and begins to take on the color and appearance of the surrounding tissue. It will then gently fade with time.
Although scars are permanent, they can improve and fade over a period of up to two years based on the severity of the injury, the size of the wound and the location on the body. After this time, it is unlikely they will continue to fade.
Raised (hypertrophic): You can feel a hypertrophic scar when you run your finger over it. These raised scars may get smaller over time, but they never completely flatten out. Unlike keloids, they don't grow or spread beyond the wounded area.
In the early healing stage, expect the scar to be red, purple, or pink, with a firm or raised texture. Over months, color fades and the scar becomes more similar to surrounding skin. The texture also evolves from hard and raised to softer and flatter.
Bulk– scar massage may help flatten certain bulky scars; nevertheless, keloid scars are unlikely to benefit.
Scars can change over time. In many cases, they may flatten or fade, but it is rare for them to entirely disappear. This is because the skin is permanently altered by injuries that cause scarring. Scar treatment is a safe and effective way to reduce the appearance of scarring.
Finally, the remodelling stage begins and continues for a period from several weeks to a few years. Scar remodelling is what changes a thick, red, raised scar to a thin, flat, white scar and over the course of time, your scars will usually fade and become barely noticeable.
Dr. Condie says, “There are numerous factors that impact the body's ability to heal, which means no one will take the same amount of time to recover from an injury to their skin, but there are four main phases of healing that should be expected: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling.” Below, Dr.
Topical Treatments with Retinoids: Retinoid-based creams are known to increase cell turnover and fade dark scars faster. Chemical Peels: Chemical peels can remove dead skin cells and lighten scars. They are particularly effective for dark scars on the face or body.
Scar Formation
Wounds heal by forming scar tissue. Initially, the healed wound may appear flat and smooth, but if it has taken more than 21 days to heal, this is likely to change over the next three months. As the wound heals, new connective tissue is formed.
The belief that topical Vitamin E is beneficial for scars treatment stems from its reputation as an antioxidant that promotes skin health. However, research studies have consistently shown that applying Vitamin E directly to scars does not improve their appearance or aid in the healing process.
This may help minimize the appearance of a scar. Apply sunscreen to the wound after it has healed. Sun protection may help reduce red or brown discoloration and help the scar fade faster. Always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and reapply frequently.
An early scar has a reddish or pink color and is often raised. As months pass, normal scar maturation occurs and eventually the scar will fade to a white line and flatten. This scenario is typical of a well-healing scar and can take up to 9 to 14 months to occur.
As your skin continues to heal, the scar will flatten and change color. In time, many flat scars are nearly the same color as your skin. A flat scar may also be paler or slightly darker than your surrounding skin.
Hypertrophic Scars – Raised scars that remain within the boundaries of the initial injury, incision or trauma, hypertrophic scars can be red and raised enough to be readily noticeable. In some cases, hypertrophic scars will fade over time on their own.
It's never too late to do a scar massage, but you'll have better results if you start it two to three weeks after surgery. Scar massage may still be helpful if you're experiencing prolonged sensitivity or discomfort.

Treatment for scars
The skin edges touch, allowing fast healing of the area as skin cells from either side migrate across to the other side and seal the wound in about 24-48 hours. This relatively narrow area will become the scar tissue, but can stretch and widen or thicken over time due to many factors.
There are four stages of wound healing: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation and remodeling (also called scar maturation). “The first phase happens within minutes to hours, then the second phase lasts from one to two days,” Dr.
Scars take time to settle. The lumpiness, puckering and thickening in the scar take 2-3 months to diminish, whilst the redness and pigmentation can take up to 9-12 months to fade. Most scars become flat and pale after 12 months.
