Humans can also be quite rough when patting a dog on the head, and it may not be an enjoyable experience for your dog. Coupled with the fact that dogs inherently dislike something reaching down from above toward them, most dogs quickly learn to associate a hand reaching toward their head with discomfort or stress.
Still, "I find that most dogs (especially when their owners are handling them), love their head and ears scratched — it is a sign of affection, bonding and attention," Kaplan said.
Most dogs dislike being touched on top of the head and on the muzzle, ears, legs, paws and tail. Slow petting, similar to gentle massage or light scratching, can calm a dog down. Place your hand on an area where the dog enjoys being handled and gently move your hand or fingers in the same direction the fur lies.

Yet most humans think that dogs like being patted on the head. The reality is that while many dogs will put up with this if it's being done by someone they know and trust, most dogs don't enjoy it. You may notice that even the loving family dog might lean away slightly when you reach for her face to pet her.
Patting a dog on the head can, in fact, be perceived as threatening behaviour by the dog. Sarah Bartlett, a qualified international dog training instructor, told The Mirror: "The wrong way to approach a dog is to walk up to them head on and just lean straight over them and go down and [stroke them].”
While you may think your touch is therapeutic, your dog may therefore not be in the right state of mind for such contact. Therefore, he may bite because he is too alert or defensive—or simply because he is bothered by your touch.
The most likely reason your dog is yelping when you touch him is because he is in pain and discomfort.

For example, most dogs prefer being touched with long gentle strokes along the chest, shoulder and base of the tail. While some dogs have other places they enjoy a gentle fuss, such as along their ears. And, there are areas which are more sensitive to touch and therefore, less welcome!

To be safe, you should not kiss dogs on their heads. Most dogs, at best, tolerate humans kissing them.
Pats are great too; just avoid the top of your dog's head. Dogs don't like head pats any more than they like hugs. You can also play games with your dog, like fetch, tug-of-war, or hide-and-seek.
