Dog mating sounds can vary from panting to whining to outright screaming, which can be unsettling for inexperienced breeders to witness.
Moaning, whining, crying, and even screaming serve as a form of "mating call" to male dogs throughout the neighborhood.
Your Dog Might Not Be Feeling Well
Some dogs will groan, whimper, or sigh as a sign of pain. As dogs age, it is common for them to develop arthritis along the spine and hips. Meaning curling up may suddenly be uncomfortable. Similarly, if your dog has an upset tummy, it may be made worse when laying down.
In perfect situations, all of this occurs without any pain or discomfort for your female dog. However sometimes there can be variances in mating tendencies, and this can have a direct impact on how your dog behaves. She might try to pull away from the male during the tie.
For example, in some cases, male dogs were observed to show aggression towards oestrous females before mating with them, and to use force to gain mating, providing support for the occurrence of male sexual coercion in this species [80], [81], [86], [87].
Dogs scream when mating for many reasons, including stress, anxiety, pain, and being bred too early.
Dogs sigh and groan to show contentment and disappointment. Puppies moan and groan when they are settling down for a nap, and adults may sigh as they relax in your lap or on their dog beds.
For our four-legged friends, the sounds a dog makes when experiencing pain or feeling happy can be the same. On the other hand, a moan is a thinner, long-winded whining-like sound that aims to utter or signify pleasure.
Groaning, moaning, and other little noises often occur when they are satisfied, when they are lying down to rest, or when they are being petted and loved on. When dogs want their owner's attention, they tend to whine, bark, moan, and groan until they get the attention they want.
A slight mucus discharge may occur around one month after mating. Her teats may become more prominent in colour and size around 30 days after mating, and you may also see them produce a semi-clear fluid. Similar to our “morning sickness”, your dog may vomit a little in the early stages of pregnancy.
For most females, the best time for breeding is between the tenth and fourteenth day of estrus. However, some females ovulate as early as the third or fourth day or as late as the eighteenth day. It is normal to arrange for two matings (also called stud services) for your dog, often 24 to 48 hours apart.
The male sexually dimorphic behaviors in dogs include interest in estrous vaginal secretions, mounting, pelvic thrusting, ejaculation, urine marking, roaming, and intermale aggression.
Science proves that part of the canine brain is associated with positive emotions and they do, indeed, feel love for their human companions.
Licking is a natural part of the male dog's behavior. Female dogs will lick their vulva quite vigorously sometimes as they derive pleasure from this activity.
Bonk told The Dodo. “If a dog is taken care of by a female, they're more likely to prefer females, [whereas] if they're primarily taken care of by a male, they may prefer males.” And in some cases, these associations can be negative.
A kissing noise is friendly and is just the perfect sound to get your dog's attention in a nice calm way. Dogs have been responding to this sound for years and it feels completely normal for them to come to this signal.
And when the pain gets unbearable:
Crying out loudly or vocalizing in distress. Unwilling to get up. Moaning or groaning while at rest. Notice how many other symptoms of pain a dog might have before they actually cry out.
Dogs may whimper or whine when they are stressed, afraid, or in pain. Whining can also mean that your dog wants attention, such as food, a walk, or some tummy rubs. They could even be trying to ask you to help them find their favorite toy.
Ascites in dogs, or fluid in the abdomen
Ascites, or fluid buildup in the abdomen, is the most common medical reason why dogs groan when they lay themselves down. Trapped fluid causes dogs to vocalize as they struggle to get comfy.
The Root of the Behavior
When your dog turns his back to you, he is showing you that he's friendly and trusts you. In the animal world, turning your back to someone puts you in a vulnerable position. Your dog is trusting that you won't attack him from behind.
The high-pitched cry is their way of expressing what they want or letting you know they're unhappy. Dogs may also whine when they're scared (like in a thunderstorm), or if they have separation anxiety and are left alone. Dogs may also whine when in pain.
There are several reasons your male dog is whining so much including; excitement, anticipation, apprehension or anxiety. This behaviour may increase if there is a nearby female dog in heat.
When your pup really does start to flirt, you may notice her turning her back on the male dog and moving her tail aside, so that he can sniff and lick at her private parts. That's the way dogs flirt.
It's called a “copulatory tie”. Don't do anything to try to separate the dogs, especially pull them apart by force, which could hurt them! Stay calm and wait for the dogs to unstick themselves. If they're still stuck together after an hour (which is unlikely to happen), call your vet to get advice.
