One cheek may look slightly different to the other cheek, but this happens with patients who are asymmetrical to begin with.
Patient may take notice to the uneven appearance several weeks post treatment or 3+ months post treatment when the body starts to slowly metabolize the filler. Additional areas that can be “botched” are cheekbones, chin, marionette lines, etc.
Fortunately, dermal fillers work very quickly, and you won't have to wait twelve months to see the full benefits of your injections. That said, these injectable treatments take some time to integrate into your tissues, and it's normal for your dermal filler to take up to two weeks to fully settle into your face.
Cheek filler may also move to another part of your face. This can cause your face to look lopsided (asymmetrical) or lumpy. If this happens, your provider can often use another type of injection to dissolve the filler.

The Results Improve Over Time
Because these injections stimulate your body's production of collagen and elastin, the final results of treatment won't be seen for several weeks. Even as the hyaluronic acid is processed by your body, healthy collagen and elastin grow at a more significant rate.
“Proper placement of mid-face and lower face filler should not significantly affect the smile,” he shares. With that said, “if an overly firm filler is used or if the region is overfilled, an unnatural appearance can result as the lips push against stiff surrounding tissues,” he adds.
Generally, any lumps or bumps that appear after fillers will disappear on their own within one to two weeks. Give the treatment a couple of weeks to improve, applying ice regularly.
A bad cheek filler injection may cause persistent swelling or puffiness in the treated area. Individuals may also experience having a pillow face or sunset eyes which can result from overfilling the cheeks. It may also cause allergic reaction symptoms, facial asymmetry, infection, and skin discoloration.
Treating with 1ml at a time is certainly appropriate for some areas, such as volumising lips or having smaller tweakments into other areas of the face. Sometimes, however, more than 1ml may be required – in the cheeks, for example – as 1ml may not make a discernible difference.
In general, fillers do look better after a week due to the additional swelling, bruising, and tenderness having had time to subside. During this week the filler will have had time to become incorporated with your natural tissue so the results appear soft and natural.
Strong definition is often attained when dermal cheek filler is applied above the cheekbones. But it can also be inserted into the fat pads of the submalar and anteromedial regions below the cheek edge to replenish volume in depressed areas and flatten out nasolabial lines.
The treated area will feel different after your injections. It will likely seem fuller than usual due to the presence of the filler and post-treatment swelling. Some tenderness is also to be expected, particularly when the cheeks and temples have been injected. These sensations usually subside within a few weeks.
Cheek fillers are one that can be somewhat firm, but not hard. Patients often ask before or after their injections, “Will cheek filler soften?” The answer is almost always yes.
Lumpiness is very common to feel in your skin in the days after injection of dermal filler into the face, including the upper lip body and the cheeks and the chin area and along wrinkles and folds when injected to lift these. It will usually resolve within a couple of weeks.
While massage can sometimes improve mild symptoms such as moderate lumpiness or slight asymmetry, don't perform massage on your fillers unless instructed to do so by your plastic surgeon or injector.
Smoothing Out the Lumps
The good news is yes, those pesky filler lumps will in fact go away. It's actually quite uncommon for patients to experience any irritation or lumps following their procedure, but if you do, then you should expect them to dissipate after a few days.
The Good: Patients who experience strange side effects such as having a weird smile or a “Joker” smile after lip injections can rest assured knowing that this is a common side effect, as a result of swelling after the procedure. Wait up to a week before worrying about your weird smile.
In most cases, when the filler wears off, the face will return to its normal appearance. That means if you got the filler to eliminate wrinkles, they would reappear; the areas that experience volume loss will lose that volume again.
We recommend patients get touch-up filler injections every 6-9 months to maintain full results, though some patients are happy with filler treatments every 9-12 months.
Dermal fillers are also used to relieve a look of tiredness outside of the direct eye area. They are particularly effective for “plumping” the cheek area to get rid of the drawn look that often makes people look unwell.
Dermal fillers can be used to restore mid-face (cheek) volume and sculpt the jawline, in order to reduce the appearance of sagging jowls. The procedure is not painful, does not require any significant down-time and is excellent at lifting and sculpting the skin, where volume needs to be replaced.
Within the first two weeks after your injections, lumps and bumps are normal because the cheek filler is settling. If they are particularly pronounced, your injector may recommend massaging the filler. Secondly, if it is after two weeks, your injector will likely still recommend massage first.
When injected, these substances can cause allergic reactions, infections, and the death of skin cells. Another risk is that improper injection technique can lead not only to swelling and lumpiness, but also more serious side effects such as death of skin cells, and embolism leading to blindness.
Similar to lip filler swelling stage, as well as other dermal filler treatment procedures, swelling from cheek filler injection treatment is expected to reach its peak within 24 to 72 hours following the treatment session. From then on, swelling is expected to subside gradually and improvements will be visible.
