For years many pet owners have been told that birds should not get a mirror or they will become un-tame. This is simply not true. When they see their own reflection in your window, they assume they're seeing a competitor and attack the image. The species most likely to do this are those that nest close to houses, such as American Robins, Northern Cardinals, bluebirds, California Towhees, Chipping Sparrows, and Song Sparrows.
A mirror will move around and tap your budgie on the beak as he pecks at it, and will give the impression of being an animated friendly companion (albeit a very quiet one). If you only keep a single bird, a mirror can be a useful social backup when there's pressure on your budgie quality-time.
Magpies. Only one bird species has shown evidence of self-recognition and that's the magpie. The birds are capable of recognizing a non-natural mark on their feathers and preening it until it no longer appears in a mirror. They've also used mirrors to guide their own self-directed behavior.
Shiny Objects
The reflection of light off of these objects discourages birds from returning to these areas. These shiny objects, such as old CDs, aluminum cans, tin foil, small mirrors, or even metallic wrapping paper, can be hung near nesting or landing areas frequented by the problematic birds.
Birds are far cleverer than we perhaps give them credit for, so we can forgive their lack of vanity when it comes to mirrors. When birds see their reflection, they think they are seeing another bird, not themselves. There are very few wild animals that make the connection that they are looking at themselves.

Birds are meant to fly and be with others of their own kind in a natural environment. Confinement causes birds to have temper tantrums and mood swings.
But if your cockatiel starts obsessing, not wanting to move or only moving to eat or drink, or otherwise becomes aggressive towards the mirror, it's time to take it out of the cage. What is this? But be careful when you do, the bird will most likely think you're taking always its buddy and attack your hand.
Adding a bird mirror to a cockatiel cage along with bird toys can also help lower a cockatiel's stress level, and a bird mirror can help keep a cockatiel entertained when they are alone in their cage.
A mirror can be psychologically damaging to your bird. Mirrors create a false perception of reality – the bird thinks it's talking to another bird when, in reality, it's talking to a reflection of itself. If the bird doesn't become obsessed with the mirror, it can be a fun form of enrichment though.
Much like young children, birds get bored playing with the same old toys after a while. Bird toys can be pricy, though, so some owners opt to keep a stash of several different types of toys and rotate different ones in and out of their bird's cage every couple of weeks.

Windows: The Invisible Killer
Birds collisions occur for two primary reasons: They perceive glass reflections of vegetation, landscapes, or sky to be real. They attempt to reach habitat, open spaces, or other attractive features visible through either glass surfaces or free-standing glass.
In the wild, birds have been observed flinging twigs around, stripping the bark off of twigs and tree limbs, bathing in puddles, hanging upside down and swinging as well as playing tag; these are all play activities. Crows have even been known to go "sledding" on their backs on snow-covered slopes in winter.
Birds are explorers. They love discovering new habitats for themselves. Therefore, you need to rearrange their cages to keep them entertained. You can rearrange their cage in different ways, you can get a new cage all together, rearrange it, or you can add a few interesting elements to their cage.
It is not necessary to cover bird cages at night. Sometimes a bird prefers it, sometimes it is needed to limit daylight when you have a bird who won't stop laying eggs. But for now, there is no need to cover their cage at night. Cockatiels do better with a nightlight, too, because some can be prone to night frights.

Budgies are curious, intelligent creatures who love to socialize. The reason they are intrigued with mirrors is because they see their reflection and think they have found a friend. However, some budgies can become too attached to their mirror "friend", especially if it is put in their cage.
For the most part, I do not recommend giving mirrors to parrots full time because they cause aggression, unhealthy fixation, abnormal behavior, and all-around socially bad behavior. But you can allow a lonely parrot a mirror sparingly since they make them think there is company.
Upon first encountering a mirror, dogs—like other animals—may react as if the image is another member of their species, in this case, another dog. Young dogs often treat the image in the mirror not as themselves, but as if another dog play bowed, pawed, barked, or started to zoom around the room.
