Poseidon was said to have had many lovers of both sexes (see expandable list below). His consort was Amphitrite, a nymph and ancient sea-goddess, daughter of Nereus and Doris.
NERITES A minor sea-god who was the charioteer and a male-lover of the god Poseidon.
From the love between Poseidon and Nerites was born Anteros, mutual love. Other male lovers included Pelops and Patroclus.
Like his brother Zeus, Poseidon is a famous womanizer. He is married to the sea goddess, Amphitrite, but that doesn't stop him from sleeping with everybody in sight.
Poseidon, the Powerful Sea God
He was enraged at Odysseus for blinding his beloved son. Poseidon punished Odysseus by sending him and his men multiple storms, forcing them to land on several islands that bring them harm.
Poseidon enjoyed the pleasures of the flesh, seeking romance with goddesses, humans, nymphs and other creatures. Not even physical form mattered to him: He could, and often did, transform himself or his lovers into animals so as to hide in plain sight.
Poseidon's Affairs
Demeter, trying to avoid her brother, turned into a mare, but Poseidon responded by turning into a stallion and having his way with her anyway. The product of this union was the divine horse, Arion. On another occasion, Poseidon seduced the gorgeous maiden, Medusa, in one of Athena's temples.
Accordingly, the Greek god Zeus's affairs were with willing participants – regardless of his trickery and disguise to seduce them. The male-dominated art world interpreted Zeus's promiscuity as part of fulfilling his duty to populate the newly formed world.
Amphitrite, in Greek mythology, the goddess of the sea, wife of the god Poseidon, and one of the 50 (or 100) daughters (the Nereids) of Nereus and Doris (the daughter of Oceanus). Poseidon chose Amphitrite from among her sisters as the Nereids performed a dance on the isle of Naxos.
Poseidon was married to the Nereid, or sea nymph, Amphitrite. Triton was their son. Poseidon also had many other children out of wedlock. Poseidon is the god of the sea and waters, as well as of horses and earthquakes.
According to the Roman poet Ovid's version of the myth, Medusa, as a mortal had taken an oath of chastity, however Poseidon, lusting after her, forced himself upon her and raped her inside the temple of Athena.
Although Poseidon had a large host of lovers and many children by these women, he only had one official wife: Amphitrite, one of the Nereids.
So, when Poseidon raped Medusa she became pregnant. When her head was chopped off by Perseus, her children came to be. Pegasus and Chrysaor sprung from the severed neck of Medusa. Pegasus is also one of the most famous characters in Greek mythology, the winged white horse.
Poseidon has countless MISTRESSES, but Amphitrite was his only WIFE AND QUEEN.
Ganymede, a beautiful Trojan young man, was aducted by Zeus to serve as his personal cupbearer and lover on mount Olympus among the other gods.
Did Zeus sleep with any of his children? After Rhea refused to marry him, Zeus turned into a snake and raped her. Rhea became pregnant and gave birth to Persephone. Zeus in the form of a snake would mate with his daughter Persephone, which resulted in the birth of Dionysus.
Medusa and Poseidon engaged in a love affair and would have two children together, but not before Athena discovered the illicit affair. When Athena discovered the affair, she was enraged and immediately cursed Medusa by taking away her beauty.
Poseidon was god of the sea, earthquakes, storms, and horses and is considered one of the most bad-tempered, moody and greedy Olympian gods. He was known to be vengeful when insulted.
It was the offspring of Pasiphae, the wife of Minos, and a snow-white bull sent to Minos by the god Poseidon for sacrifice. Minos, instead of sacrificing it, kept it alive; Poseidon as a punishment made Pasiphae fall in love with it.
Hades: The Most Loyal Greek God
The Greek god Hades is comparatively a better husband than his peer gods. Whilst Zeus and Poseidon – Hades' brothers – are widely known for their affairs, Hades remained loyal to Persephone.
Zeus was known in his time as much more than the father of the gods. He was also a womanizer, and as such, he fathered many, many offspring! He would transform into various animals to fulfill his desires; therefore, his 'children' are quite interesting.
Apollo was considered to be the most handsome of all the gods. He was always depicted as having long, golden hair – the same color as the sun. He was tall and had plenty of muscles. Even though he was depicted as being fairly calm, he had a temper, just like his father.
Gods play an important role in Homer's epic the Odyssey. Almost all the gods are sympathetic to the main hero, Odysseus, except for Poseidon. Poseidon hates Odysseus because he has blinded his son Polyphemus.
According to Ptolemaeus Chennus, Patroclus also became the lover of the sea-god Poseidon, who taught him the art of riding horses.
