Mercury battled hard to cope with vocal cord problems – and found that rehearsing without clothes helped.
On 24 November 1991, British musician and Queen frontman Freddie Mercury died from bronchial pneumonia at his home in Kensington. He had exhibited HIV/AIDS symptoms as early as 1982 and was diagnosed with AIDS in 1987.

1. He had more teeth than your average lead singer. Freddie's distinctive grin was the result of having four extra teeth in the back of his mouth which pushed those at the front forward. He always refused to have his teeth fixed (see fifth entry below), fearing it would affect his vocal ability.

Amazingly enough, Mercury was suffering from a severe throat infection at the time and was advised by a backstage doctor that he was too ill to perform.
It turns out that Freddie's voice didn't arise from extra teeth or a big mouth, but from his use of a body part that's usually not accessed – the so-called “false” vocal cords.

'Bohemian Rhapsody' WAS Freddie's confessional. It was about how different his life could have been, and how much happier he might have been, had he just been able to be himself, the whole of his life. The world heard this song as a masterpiece of imagination, a great command of musical styles.
