In specific circumstances, you can apply to leave the Permanent Forces without performing Reserve service. Many of the benefits you're eligible for are the same as if you transfer to the Reserves. If you're discharged from the Permanent Forces for disciplinary reasons, you won't get any benefits.
The ADF offers some one-year roles but for general entrants the commitment is usually two to six years. Officers serve a minimum of between three and fourteen years and in general, the longer the training required the longer the commitment.
If you apply to leave the army before you're 18 then it's called Discharge as of Right (DAOR) and the army can't call you up again. But as soon as you turn 18, which is also the point at which the army can send you to war, you'll lose your right to leave and you will have to stay in the army for the next FOUR YEARS.

To get out of the military, you need to be discharged.

A medical discharge is an involuntary termination of the person's employment by the ADF on the grounds of permanent or at least long-term unfitness to serve, or unfitness for operational deployment.

Will I be posted overseas during my ADF Gap Year? No, ADF Gap Year personnel are not eligible to deploy overseas. You will, however, participate in all your unit's domestic training exercises and operations once you are qualified in your job.

The simplest way to get a discharge is to put in your time, receive an honorable discharge and walk away. It's also possible to leave the Army earlier if you fail to meet its military standards in some fashion. Contrary to popular legend, that doesn't mean your discharge must have been a dishonorable one.
If you develop anxiety or depression while serving in the military, it may be grounds for a medical discharge or retirement. The outcome depends on factors including the severity of your symptoms and how they respond to treatment.

Individuals with ADHD need a medical waiver to be able to enlist if they meet these points, with the branches — Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, and Air Force — typically requiring that applicants be off medication for several months and prove that they can function without it to be considered for a waiver.
