To remove lice and nits by hand, use a fine-tooth comb on wet, conditioned hair every 3–4 days for 3 weeks after the last live louse was seen. Go through small sections of hair at a time. Wetting the hair temporarily stops the lice from moving, and the conditioner makes it easier to get a comb through the hair.
Head lice eggs are oval, and the size of a pinhead. They are firmly attached to the hair shaft and cannot be brushed off. (A live egg will make a 'pop' sound if you crush it between your fingernails.) The easiest and most effective way to find head lice is to use the conditioner and comb treatment weekly.
These are so soft that they squish unharmed through the nit comb. It is only as the embryo develops do you then see the egg or nit. That nit becomes hard protecting the embryo inside. When you pull them off the hair you can pop the hard shell of the nit – if it pops you know the egg was viable and ready to hatch.
Use heat. Wash any items used or worn by the person in hot water, and dry them on high heat. Lice and nits die when exposed to temperatures higher than 130 F for more than 5 minutes. Wash anything that touched the person's skin or scalp, including jackets, hats, scarves, pillowcases, sheets, and headbands.
Adults are not immune to head lice. In fact, if you have any close contact with children or even parents of children you can be at risk of catching them if they have them. Lice transfer primarily through head to head contact, so you would have to get close to the other person.

Lice move in dry hair and they may therefore be easier to spot, at least if there are many. However, combing dry hair creates static and lice may be thrown from the comb back into the hair.
Head lice are very common. They are small (adult lice are the size of a sesame seed) grey-brown insects. They cannot fly or jump; neither can they burrow into the scalp.
Head lice are spread most commonly by direct contact with the hair of an infested person. Spread by contact with inanimate objects and personal belongings may occur but is very uncommon.
With the hair wet and full of conditioner, it is difficult to see whether any lice or nits have been removed. However, dry combing, which is easier to do, allows success of louse removal to be seen and has been successful in ten out of ten separate infestations.
Typically, 10–15 head lice are found. The number of lice often depends on personal hygiene, for example, how often the person bathes, shampoos, or changes and washes his/her clothing.

Permethrin lotion 1% is approved by the FDA for the treatment of head lice. Permethrin is safe and effective when used as directed. Permethrin kills live lice but not unhatched eggs. Permethrin may continue to kill newly hatched lice for several days after treatment.
If you begin to find that the nits are further away from the scalp, they may not be viable. Using a magnifying lens will make it easier to search for nits close to the scalp. You'll want to make sure that there are no clusters of nits close to your child's scalp for at least two weeks before you are in the clear.
Shaving Will Not Get Rid of Lice.
The reason shaving will not work is because lice live on the base of the hair, and on the scalp. The nits are laid right at the base of the hair oftentimes against the scalp. Shaving will not get close enough to make an impact on the lice and nits.
You can find head lice on the scalp, neck, and ears.
If a person gets lice, it doesn't feel like anything at first.
They need human blood to live. Head lice usually stay close to the scalp and behind the ears. You might also spot them on the eyebrows and eyelashes.
Lice for Building Immunity
Recent studies have shown the benefits of having lice. While it may sound ridiculous and unbelievable, there's scientific evidence that a certain kind of louse can be beneficial in reducing the chances of developing immune deficiencies.
Continue to check hair and use the nit comb to remove nits and lice every 2 to 3 days for 2 to 3 weeks. This process should be done for as long as nits and lice are still found on the head. Many lice medicines recommend a second treatment in 9 to 10 days.
Discovery of an infestation could be within hours, a day or two, or even weeks. When identifying an infestation, if only a few lice and nits are present, it is safe to say the infestation is rather new. If an individual has several lice and nits, it is likely that the lice have inhabited their host for some time.
Just like with mattresses, lice can only live on any bedding—whether it's sheets, pillows, or comforters—for 1-2 days. Without a human scalp as a source for food (blood) for longer than 1-2 days, lice cannot survive.
Lice cannot “fall” on pillows, sheets, stuffed animals, and other bedding unless the hair that they are attached to fall. But they can't live on these surfaces, or on hats, scarves, furniture, or carpet. They also can't live on pets or any other animals. Nits can't live without a human host.
Not just for chips, household salt and vinegar can be used the treat head lice. Dissolve ¼ cup of salt in to ¼ cup of warm vinegar and use a spray bottle to cover the hair until it's wet. Leave on for a couple of hours under a shower cap, and then wash hair. Repeat once every three days.
