While yardage and such is suitable, ten inch squares are a dandy size piece for a quick quilt. Slice them into strips, smaller squares or triangles to make all kinds of quilt designs. Here are eight different cuts from a 10 inch square. These quilts are super fun.
How Many 10-Inch Squares Does it Take to Make a Full Size Quilt? To make a 85.5″ x 104.5″ quilt, you will need 99 ten-inch squares.

Now and days most quilt shops (both brick and mortar and online) sell a wide variety of precut squares in packs! Sizes may vary but the standard packs are either 10 inches by 10 inches, 5 inches by 5 inches, or 2.5 inches by 2.5 inches. So just decide what size blocks you would like to build with.
Full. The standard size of a blanket to cover a full-sized bed is 78"x87" and up. You'd need a minimum of 288, 5"x5" squares to create this quilt. Plan more squares if you'd like to tuck it under the pillows or want more than a 12" drop off the sides of the mattress.
A Layer Cake is a total of 42 fabric squares. Each square is 10 inch by 10 inch. If there are 42 fabrics in the fabric collection, you get one square of each fabric.
How Many 10-Inch Squares Are in a Yard of Fabric? You can cut 12 10″ squares from one yard of fabric.
And as collections vary, so do the number of fat quarters in any given bundle. A fat quarter can be cut into 2 – 10” squares (layer cakes) with extra fabric for 4 – 5” charm squares 12 – 5” charm squares and a 22” Jolly strip.
Simple shapes: The easiest quilt patterns are made from simple shapes like squares and rectangles. Squares and rectangles are easy to cut and sew, since you don't need to worry about curves or bias edges.

Sashing is the strips of fabric between the quilt blocks.
To give each block its own space strips of fabric are sewn in between the blocks and this is known as sashing.
Again, it just depends on the drape. Queen — Queen-size quilts usually measure around 99 inches / 252cm by 108 inches / 274cm. King — For your king-size bed, you'll want a coverlet that measures at least 108 inches / 274cm by 108 inches / 274cm for nice coverage all around.
