Yes, you can eat cheese on a liver-shrinking diet, but it must be low-fat, in small portions (like 25-60g or about 1 ounce), and ideally low in salt, focusing on unprocessed types to manage fat and carbohydrate intake, especially if it's a pre-bariatric surgery diet emphasizing low carbs and protein.
You will need to eat foods high in protein (lean meat, poultry, fish, low fat milk, and eggs) which will stop you feeling very hungry and help your body cope better with the very low intake of energy.
Avoid flavored, non-fat or low fat yogurts because these contain more added sugars. It is okay to eat cheese, but choose unprocessed cheeses be cautious not to overeat. Fats are an essential part of the diet, but should be chosen carefully. Choose foods higher in omega-3 fatty acids.
Cheese. Who doesn't love cheese? This is a good choice for bariatric patients as it is low carb and has protein in it. Some of my favorite cheeses include Babybel and Laughing Cow because they can easily be thrown into your purse to take on the go.
Foods to avoid:
A small potato or two tablespoons of pasta or rice with vegetables and a small portion of meat, fish, cheese, eggs, quorn or tofu. Liquids: One third of a pint of semi-skimmed milk for drinks and cereals. Water, tea, coffee, low calorie squash, low calorie fizzy drinks allowed in any amount.
Certain foods are particularly good for liver health because they contain antioxidants, support detoxification, or reduce inflammation; these include berries, leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage and omega-3-rich fish like salmon.

Immediately following surgery, you will begin with a clear liquid diet. You may gradually start adding thicker liquids to your diet after you are discharged from the hospital. Two weeks following surgery, you may progress to blended and puréed foods.

Too Much Alcohol
Alcoholic fatty liver, which causes liver inflammation (alcoholic hepatitis), eventual scarring (cirrhosis) and even liver cancer, is a process that begins on as little as four drinks a day for men and two for women. By the time you show symptoms, your liver may be damaged beyond repair.
Start your day with a healthy breakfast such as porridge, reduced sugar cereal or scrambled eggs on wholegrain toast.
Carbohydrate allowance: Measure out a 50g cooked portion of potato, rice, pasta or noodles, plantain (green banana), yam, taro, gari, parsnips, beetroot, peas, sweet corn, baked beans, lentils or pulses, chickpeas. Foods chosen from this carbohydrate group should weigh 50g or less in total.
The only way to see is if you have a diagnostic test like a CT scan, which isn't very practical for pre bariatric surgery planning and consultations. Most surgeons will tell you that if you're following the prescribed pre bariatric surgery diet AND you're losing weight, your liver is shrinking as it should be.
Refined Carbohydrates: White bread, pasta, and rice can spike blood sugar levels, leading to more liver fat. Opt for whole grain breads and pastas, and unrefined grains such as brown rice and rolled oats which are higher in fibre.
Approximately eight weeks after undergoing gastric sleeve surgery, you can start reintroducing cheese—a staple for many—into your diet with caution.
Practice the 20-20-20 technique
Chew each bite size piece of food 20 times before swallowing. Wait for 1 minute before you take your next bite of food. Eat for only 20 minutes. Stop eating before 20 minutes if you start experiencing pain or discomfort in your chest.
Why can't I eat red meat after surgery? You can, but you will need to be very careful, and we recommend that you avoid it for the first several months. Red meats contain a high level of meat fibers (gristle) which hold the piece of meat together, preventing you from separating it into small parts when you chew.
Cottage Cheese Takes the Win
As it turns out, all five dietitians agreed: Cottage cheese is the healthiest option. Cottage cheese stands out from other cheeses because of how it's made: Instead of being pressed into a solid block, it's formed from large, loose milk curds, which allows some liquid (whey) to remain.
Understanding the 3-3-3 Rule
Specifically, the rule suggests: Three balanced meals per day. Three hours between each meal. Three hours of movement per week.
Very Low-Calorie Diet (VLCD)

The best way to reverse the damage is to remove whatever is causing it. For example, if you have fatty liver caused by drinking alcohol, it's important to stop drinking. If it's caused by your diet or being overweight, then it's important to eat healthily and lose weight.
Citrus fruits stimulate the liver and help it turns toxic materials into substances that can be absorbed by water. Grapefruit is especially good as it contains naringin and naringenin, which are antioxidants that reduce inflammation to protect the liver from injury.
If you love broccoli, you're in luck. This cruciferous vegetable — along with cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and mustard greens — are good for your liver. They are a source of fiber, which supports liver health. Plus, they contain antioxidants and phytochemicals that may help prevent liver cancer.
