A general practitioner (GP) can start the process but does not formally diagnose dyslexia. Dyslexia is a learning difference, not a medical condition or disease, and therefore cannot be diagnosed through a single medical test, blood test, or lab screening.

The only way dyslexia can be formally diagnosed is through a Diagnostic Assessment carried out by a certified dyslexia assessor. This assessment will tell you if your child is dyslexic or not.

Diagnosis of dyslexia
Your GP or SENCo will ask about your child's symptoms and medical history and your GP may examine them. Your GP may refer you to a specialist health professional such as an educational psychologist to help assess your child. Whoever you see, they'll ask various questions to make a diagnosis.
