Worm infections mostly don't cause symptoms. Sometimes children get coloured and itchy bottoms. Treat everyone in the family with worming tablets. It's a good idea to keep children home from school or child care if they have worms.
A child can go through deworming on a regular basis to get the intestinal worms removed. If the worms are not removed, they can multiply and lay eggs in the intestine, leading to major damage to the body. Some of these intestinal parasites can even be fatal and hence should not be ignored.
Treatment to get rid of worms
If you have worms, a GP will prescribe medicine to kill them. You take this for 1 to 3 days. The people you live with may also need to be treated. Any worms in your gut will eventually pass out in your poo.
Give to children 1 year up to 5 years (12-59 months) of age. It is safe and effective to give deworming in combination with vitamin A every 4-6 months.
If you or your child has threadworms, everyone in your household will need to be treated as there's a high risk of the infection spreading. This includes those who don't have any symptoms of an infection. For most people, treatment will involve taking a single dose of a medication called mebendazole to kill the worms.
Although often asymptomatic, parasitic infections can lead to disruptions in mood, behavior and sleep – particularly in children with worms.
The symptoms that indicate the presence of the worms are poor appetite, unintentional weight loss, rashes on the buttocks, stomach pain, constipation or diarrhoea, frequent urination and fatigue.
Tulsi leaf juice with honey or peach juice and honey is also helpful. Food like ajwain (caraway), black pepper (kaali mirch), asafoetida (hing), black salt (kala namak), dry ginger, garlic, turmeric are good for deworming. Take ajwain mixed with a pinch of salt on empty stomach for a week to eliminate worms.
Threadworms do not go away by themselves, and people do not build up immunity to them, so they must be treated in order to eradicate them totally from the body.
If you have a large number of worms in the intestine, you might have: Severe abdominal pain. Fatigue. Vomiting.
The main sign of threadworms is an itchy bottom. Sometimes children feel 'out of sorts' and do not want to eat much. Threadworms do not cause major health problems, and are usually not the cause of tummy pain. Scratching of the bottom can cause a red rash around the anus, which can sometimes become infected.
If your child is infected with threadworm, it is not usually serious and can be treated easily with medication. If your child has threadworm, they may: • have an itchy bottom, which may become red and inflamed from scratching • be irritable and generally 'out of sorts' • not sleep very well • have a reduced appetite.
Infected children may become anaemic and tired, and have difficulty learning. The worms absorb vital nutrients from the intestine, which can affect children's growth, health, and nutrition.
Worms then travel from the belly into the chest. There they can cause respiratory symptoms, such as: Cough.
When the eggs are scratched off onto the hands or under the nails they can be transferred to other children at home or at school, or to adults. Most often they go to the scratching child's mouth where they can be swallowed and start another infection, known as an “auto infection”.
Once you have dewormed your puppy, you'll probably want to know how long your dog will continue to poop worms. Puppies will typically poop worms for 2-3 days after they have been dewormed.
How long does it take for worms to be gone after deworming? Once you take the deworming medicine, the medicine starts working immediately, but it might take a few days to kill all the worms. It is advised to take a second dose after two weeks to prevent reinfection.
For the best deworming effect, you should give the medicine to your baby 2 hours after dinner or early in the morning (on an empty stomach).
This is why you may need to take another dose 2 weeks later to help prevent reinfection. How long does it take to work? The medicine should start to work straight away but it may take several days to kill all the worms. It's important to take the medicine as a pharmacist or doctor tells you.
Intestinal worms increase your risk for anemia and intestinal blockages, as well as malnutrition. Complications occur more frequently in older adults and in people who have suppressed immune systems, such as people with HIV/AIDS infection. Intestinal worm infections can pose a higher risk if you're pregnant.
If you have tried a threadworm treatment for your child and their symptoms have not improved, take them to your GP. The doctor will examine your child and may want to do blood or faeces (poo) tests. Also take your child to the GP if: your child passes a large worm.
Kids in school get pinworms easily because they spend a lot of time with other kids, who may have pinworms. They might touch something with pinworm eggs on it when they're playing with other kids and eat the eggs without even knowing it.
They noted that not deworming children as specified by the World Health Organisation can lead to malnutrition, low blood count, intestinal perforation and death.
