So yeah, this is my essay on why Charizard could not have been a Dragon-type starter back in Gen 1. It was all about a balance issue. It got a Mega Evolution with Fire/Dragon, but it was back in Gen 6... and when Charizard was no longer considered a starter; Delphox was the new Fire starter.
It just says that ancient dragons are aged 801 years or more. Going by that, 1200 years would be a fair estimate of the likely maximum lifespan of a dragon. The Dragonomicon does give the 1201 year+ age for ancient great wryms though.
