Filler migration is the movement of a dermal filler from its injection site to another area of the body. While it is possible for fillers to migrate, this side effect is extremely rare and can be avoided by choosing a qualified injector.
In rare cases, facial fillers like Juvederm can migrate to another site of your face within a few days of your injections. This happens when the filler moves before it has fully bonded with your facial tissue.
It's also not uncommon for the filler to slowly migrate away from your cheeks or chin over time, meaning that corrective treatments may become necessary.
In rare cases where there is facial filler migration, it typically occurs in two locations. They are most likely to migrate around the lips or under the eyes.
Fillers should not migrate downwards after injection due to gravity. Therefore you should not be worried about jowling and sagging if you use a board certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist for injection.
This is because when filler migrates, it only does so very slightly (within a few millimeters) and rarely causes medical complications. But, if you see small lumps and/or raised skin around the treatment area, this may be an indication your filler has moved slightly or your skin has been overfilled.
Signs and symptoms of allergic reactions to cheek fillers include prolonged swelling, pain, and discomfort. It may also cause itchiness and, in very rare cases, anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is the severe allergic reaction to medication or food that leads to shock, skin rashes, and low pulse rate.
