For most Buddhists, however, the desire to look pretty and wear makeup, even if it's just for yourself, is still considered a material attachment. Until you rid yourself of all attachments, the belief is you won't reach enlightenment and be forced to reincarnate for all eternity.
The precepts are commitments to abstain from killing living beings, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying and intoxication. Within the Buddhist doctrine, they are meant to develop mind and character to make progress on the path to enlightenment.
Beauty (kalyàõa or subha) is the quality of being pleasing to the senses and the mind. An object, a sound or even a behaviour or an idea can be described as beautiful. The Buddha said that while personal physical beauty is a blessing, it is also true that it can lead to clinging and egoism.
Theravada nuns wear light pink or white robes. Typically only seen during morning almsgiving rituals, alms bowls are worn around the neck. In Bhutan and Nepal, both monks and nuns generally wear only maroon robes, with some variation of red. Both countries practice Buddhism that is closely-related to Tibetan Buddhism.
There are three types of chivara: the inner robe (Pali: antaravasaka), made of 5 strips of cloth; the outer robe (uttarasanga), made of 7 strips; and the great robe, or cloak (samghati), made of 9, 15, or 25 strips. In order to avoid the primary colours, Buddhist robes are of mixed colours, such as orange or brown.
Simplistic clothing must be worn within a Buddhist temple and should be observed when practicing meditation so many lay people wear collared shirts, polo tops and loose-fitting pants. I have not been in a Buddhist temple and do not follow these voluntary practices strictly.
Dress modestly
Men and women should wear clothing that covers most or all of the body. Shirts should have sleeves, and pants should cover beyond the knees. Avoid tank-tops and short shorts.
Buddhism encourages nonattachment in romantic relationships. In order to follow the path of enlightenment, Buddhism teaches people to discard all things in life that can cause pain, so one must detach from the idea of a perfect person and instead accept a partner unconditionally.
According to more general Buddhist monastic codes, a Buddhist monk must not wear footwear that covers the toes and the heels. However, monks can wear shoes that have been donated to them, which is useful to monks living in colder climates, or where the terrain is rough. So minimalism is key.
Monks robes, which originated in India, were worn in various shades of yellow, ranging to orange and saffron, as they are today by monks in Thailand, Burma and other countries in South East Asia. Though yellow is still present in Tibetan monk's robes, the dominant hue is burgundy red.
Buddhism much like Hinduism is not particularly restrictive when it comes to tattoos. Buddhists believe that the body is impermanent and so are tattoos. Because they are viewed as temporary, getting tattoos doesn't violate any Buddhist doctrines or beliefs.
The five principal kleshas, which are sometimes called poisons, are attachment, aversion, ignorance, pride, and jealousy.
Just as blood nourishes the heart which keeps it flowing, so love nourishes spiritual freedom and is, in turn, kept flowing by it. The connection is so strong that Buddhism, often known as a Path of Freedom, could equally be called a religion of love.
Do not place images or statues of Buddha as if they were furniture or decorative objects. Don't place a Buddha statue in the middle of a table. Don't place a Buddha statue in the toilet. Don't place Buddha statues in bars or restaurants.
Ānantarya Karma (Sanskrit) or Ānantarika Kamma (Pāli) are the most serious offences in Buddhism that, at death, through the overwhelming karmic strength of any single one of them, bring immediate disaster. Both Buddhists and non-Buddhists must avoid them at all costs.
Most modern Buddhists are less strict concerning intoxicants, and although coffee has a mild effect on the brain, social and daily consumption is generally accepted.
You should have your knees and shoulders covered, for both men and women. Wear a clean and neat outfit (not something full of holes for example). Uncover your head and remove your shoes (socks are ok).
Dress Code - Every temple implements a dress code before you can enter. A good rule of thumb is to dress up that covers most areas of your body. Avoid wearing shorts, tank tops, or dresses that are above the knees. Upon entering any building on the temple grounds, you must remove your hats and shoes.
The tradition of wearing monastic robes is common for Buddhist monks and nuns and this tradition may date back to time of Lord Buddha himself, almost 2500 years ago. The monastic robes are known as Kasaya and is usually named after saffron dye .
Buddhism, the Thai state religion, teaches that use of intoxicants should be avoided.
According to one – the Buddhist Women Special Marriage Law – before a Buddhist woman can marry a non-Buddhist man, the couple must go through an administrative process, including the public posting of a marriage application and allowing the community to submit objections.
Love is generated from twin impulses. Buddhism calls them emptiness and compassion; we could also call them wonder and warmth.
During menstruation, women should not enter temples or shrines, being seen as polluted. In Sri Lankan Buddhism, this is also true for their husbands and other men, who have been in a home with menstruating women.

You should not stand with your back to the Buddha. This is considered disrespectful of the Lord Buddha. This means no selfies with Buddha statues whether they are in a temple or outside. It is okay to photograph the Buddha statues.
Bright colors aren't appropriate. You should especially avoid wearing red, as this symbolizes happiness for Buddhists. If the funeral is taking place in a temple, a shirt and tie or a skirt or dress is appropriate attire.
