The 2 main types of intestinal parasites are helminths and protozoa. Helminths are generally visible to the naked eye in their adult stages, whereas protozoa are single-celled organisms.
Sometimes adult worms can be seen moving under the skin. High numbers of blood cells called eosinophils are sometimes found on blood counts.
Often, multiple samples are collected and tested. These should be collected at different times on different days because parasites are shed periodically and may not be in your stool at all times.
