INFJs are known for their strong insights about people and situations. They get these insights through the use of their dominant cognitive function, Introverted Intuition. They also are extremely aware of people's emotions and moods.
You'll often find INFJs observing others using their introverted X-ray vision to read into what they really think, feel, or desire. I'm an INFJ, the most rare of the Myers-Briggs introverted personality types. We're known for characteristics such as being empathic, perceptive, and sensing things others may miss.
INFJs are able to connect deeply with those around them. They are good listeners, who are able to serve as a helpful friend or confidante to those who need it. They seek close relationships with others, often using their skills to build strong, reliable friendships. They are driven by their convictions and values.
INFJs can read people and do so very well, but this ability is, contrary to their belief, generally limited to matters of feeling, emotion, and morality. It extends less to thought or intent, areas where they may find themselves lost, “driven with the wind and tossed”.
3. INFJs can see right through you. INFJs are extremely sensitive to others' needs. These introverts are great at reading a room, and they understand what makes people tick on a deep level.
At their best, INFJs make modest, reliable teammates, and allow others to take the lead. INFJs may undervalue their own needs, ideas, and contributions, acting overly shy and not taking credit when due. At their worst, INFJs can be excessively submissive, ineffectual, and too dependent on direction from others.
INFJs are on a different wavelength. This is because we're so intuitive and we have dominant introverted intuition. It gives us kind of a sixth sense that is difficult to explain to others.
INFJs are enigmas to other types, and sometimes the way they think, speak, or function can look outwardly awkward. Most of these behaviors are easy to explain when they're analyzed. So if you or someone you know is an INFJ, remember not to dismiss these habits as awkward, but as evidence of how you tick.
INFJs also feel embarrassed when they cry in front of others or react emotionally to criticism. They also experience “second-hand embarrassment”. This occurs when they empathize too strongly with someone who has done something awkward or is embarrassing themselves.
When I surveyed INFJs about their flirting styles, more than anything, they expressed a deep desire to connect emotionally with someone they liked. They will be more emotionally open, express more of their deeper longings, and become more vulnerable with you if they like you.
INFJs are capable of mechanical memorization, but the amount retained this way is less than from memory based on understanding. INFJs are capable of accurately reproducing received information, especially if they associate it with any feelings.
Intuition (N), Talkativeness & Talk Therapy
Because both INFJs and INTJs employ intuition, or more specifically, Introverted Intuition (Ni), as their dominant function, they can be quite loquacious, especially when discussing topics that interest them.
Their introverted nature allows them to be excellent listeners. Careers for INFJs in counseling, therapy, or psychology are good choices to consider because of this natural trait. They tend towards introversion, so career paths involving writing and research can suit this personality type particularly well.
Introverted Intuition is the strongest and most accessible function of the INFJ. In a way, this is the function they live and breathe. It's not hard for INFJs to tap into Ni because it's the most relied upon part of their psyche.
Both emotional and logical: When making decisions, INFJs place a greater emphasis on their emotions than objective facts. But this doesn't mean they see the world through rose-colored glasses. INFJs understand the world, both the good and the bad, and hope to be able to make it better.
INFJs are unique not only because they are the rarest type, but because many people liken them to having a sixth sense, of sorts, because they often seem to leap intuitively to the correct answer, without having to know all of the facts beforehand.
The INFJ type result is one of the most common mistypes I come across; I've found that usually, about 80% of the people who type as INFJs online are actually ISFJs, INFPs, or ISFPs.
As one of the rarest personality types, they have a difficult time meeting someone like them in their careers, families, or other social groups. INFJs carry a burden few others will ever share. They often feel like they don't fit in, can't be “seen,” or aren't accepted as they truly are.
The INFJ. Upon first meeting, people often find you calm yet focused. There's a warmth and friendliness to your demeanor that helps put people at ease and encourages them to speak freely. Yet you also give people their space and are not prone to long bouts of chit-chat or small-talk.
INFJs may seem shy at first, but they usually have a lot going on beneath the surface. They tend to follow their hunches to determine what to do next. However, they'll usually share their vision for the future only with the people they're closest to.
This personality loves to help others and is very creative. Content and design development won't be a problem. It's public speaking part where this person will run into trouble. Because they are shy, the INFJ will not feel comfortable speaking in front of others or engaging with the audience.
Creative and rational. The combination of introversion, sensitivity and empathy in INFJs creates a person who absorbs lots of information from the world and the people around them. INFJs are constantly processing this steady stream of details.
Favorite topics can vary widely, but psychology, history, philosophy, and other social sciences seem to be particularly popular fields of study for INFJs who enjoy research as a hobby.
They look at your eyes, your body language, your tone of voice, connect to your past and then try to determine what you really mean. This can make the INFJ prone to overanalyzing, but often their insights are very accurate.
