Note: Whatever you decide, remember that being alone at night can be scary for a puppy, especially if they've never been separated from their mum and littermates before. It's normal for a puppy to need time and training to feel comfortable sleeping on their own through the night.

Using a treat, give your dog his “settle down” command, reward him and get yourself into bed. Every time your dog jumps on the bed or cries to be let up, step out of bed, get a treat (leave a secure stash of treats on a bedside table), walk your dog back to their bed and repeat the “settle down” command.

It may help to start with having your dog sleep near you and then gradually move them further away. For example, instead of having them in your bed, try putting their crate or bed on your bedroom floor, then move it to outside your open door, then keep moving it slowly each night, until it's where you want it to be.
With regard to companionship, it suggests that dogs should not be left alone for more than four hours a day depending on their age. However the survey revealed that 23% of respondents left their dog alone for more than five hours a day on a typical weekday.

Anxiety and Separation Anxiety
Many dogs suffer from separation anxiety. If your dog starts whining as soon as you walk away or only whines when she isn't allowed to sleep in the bed or in the room with you, then she may have separation anxiety.
Dogs are sociable animals and love company, but although it is good practice that they learn to be home alone for a period of time, it is not advisable to leave them alone for very long periods, like overnight.
