Buy Nothing New Month is a campaign for conscious consumption that started in Melbourne, Australia. Every year during the whole month of October, participants pledge to buy nothing new except essentials such as food, hygiene and health products.

The campaign encourages people to rethink their buying habits: “Do I really need this product? Are there alternatives? Can I borrow it from friends or family, or buy it second-hand?” Rethinking shopping behaviour can help to shift from consumption to community.

Another moment for conscious consumption is Buy Nothing Day, which occurs on the Saturday after Black Friday at the end of November.
