Shaking off excess water

Delayed symptoms of drowning include shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, coughing and/or chest discomfort. Extreme fatigue, irritability and behavior changes are also possible. Remain vigilant for about 24 hours, even if your child appears happy and playful with no apparent problem at all.

Puppies and small dogs can be held upside down to allow water to drain from the lungs. For larger dogs, lay them on their side and elevate the upper body so that the water can drain out of the nose and mouth. Check for a pulse.

Fear, stress, and anxiety can also cause your dog to shake and act in a way that isn't normal. Common triggers of stress tremors include fireworks, big environmental changes, or fear of physical harm.
