If the person who you sent a message to has their read receipts enabled, then they will automatically send a read receipt when they open the message. Some people don't have receipts enabled, and it's usually pretty easy to tell.
You only have to turn on the airplane mode of your device or shut down the internet. After that, you can read the message, and it will not show the read receipt to the sender.
The option lets others know you have read their messages. From now on, when you send messages via RCS chat, you'll see the Delivered status when the text reaches the recipient's inbox. Once the person reads the messages, the status changes to Read.
On an Android
First, open your Messages app and navigate to the settings. Depending on your phone model, operating system, and cellular provider, you will notice one of the following: Read Receipts, Send Read Receipts or Request Receipt. Turn on the applicable option.

When it doesn't say Delivered, it means the other person is texting someone else or on the phone. Once they stop texting or hang up the phone, you will see the text message has been delivered.

Like iPhone users, Android read receipts require both sender and recipient to enable the feature. Instructions may vary according to your device's manufacturer, model, and operating system.
A delivered text message status does not necessarily mean that the recipient reads the message. It simply means that the message was received by their device and is stored in their memory. The recipient may still choose not to read or open the message, even though it has been delivered successfully.
What texting app are you using? This would vary by app and your settings... "Read" like means the receiver has actually read the message (or at least acknowledged they received it), and "SMS" probably means that the message was sent, but no acknowledgement was returned or requested.
