Scientists call this covering behavior “caching” and it's something wild cats also do. Caching is a way of saving leftovers for later. Hiding the food protects it from scavengers, and might help keep the meat cool and fresh.
A cat who takes food out of his bowl to eat in another spot may be performing an instinctual behavior handed down from his African wild cat ancestors. Or, he may simply not like eating where you want him to eat. Something, from your cat's perspective, may be wrong with the placement of his food bowl.
Territorial behavior
Cats are territorial, and like other pets, they may choose to guard their resources. If another cat regularly eats their food, they may flip their bowl and try to hide their food under it or take it to another room where they can eat in peace.
Why does your cat want you to watch her eat? According to Dr. Koski, some cats prefer the company of a companion while feeding — something known in the cat world as social or affection feeding. And while your cat might want you to watch her scarf down her meal, some cats actually like to be pet while eating!
In cases where these people owned dogs, their pets would usually go several days without resorting to eating the owner's body. However, a cat would only wait a day or two. The phenomenon is called "postmortem predation."
For people, eating is a social event, but because cats are solitary hunters, most would prefer to eat alone. This means when one cat in a home must be fed separately from the others, she is probably happier. Although they prefer to eat alone, healthy cats may not mind the presence of others at feeding time.
Pawing or scratching around the food is not harmful in itself. It's your cat instinct behavior to stay safe and hide the traces of her presence from other predators. In fact, some cat owners even find such behavior cute.
If the water bowl is too small or deep, the whiskers can get squished when the cat lowers her head for a drink. To avoid this discomfort, a cat may learn it's easier to just dip a paw in the water. Ensure your cat's water bowl allows for whisker comfort by using one wide enough to accommodate those long whiskers.
Slapping at the water dish is a way for cats to get their water moving a bit, which makes them feel more comfortable about drinking it. If your cat bats at the water in her bowl before getting a drink and likes to climb on the counter to drink water out of the tap when you turn it on, this might be the reason.
Cats are biologically programmed not to drink water which is near their food or near their toileting area - this is thought to be their instinctive avoidance of contaminating their water with potential sources of bacteria.
In the wild, cats can spend hours (or even days) hunting for their food. However, domesticated cats, especially indoor kitties, don't get that same amount of stimulation. Therefore, your cat may feel bored with their food because there's no fun in it! Try playing with your cat before giving them their meal.
About three years ago, a NY Times article drew attention to a problem plaguing cats around the world – a condition called “whisker stress” or “whisker fatigue.” Whisker stress is described as an unpleasant sensation caused when a cat's whiskers touch the side of the bowl as they eat or drink.

Water and food bowl location matters
Some cats won't touch water if it's too close to their food bowl. The theory is that in the wild, cats would keep their food far away from water sources in order to keep those water sources free of bacteria and other possible contamination.
Kneading to convey comfort — Happy cats appear to knead to show pleasure. Cats often knead while being petted, or when snuggling into a napping spot. Your cat may also knead on your lap to show her love and contentment, and then settle in for a pat or nap. A stressed cat may knead to create a soothing, calm mood.
It's an expression of pure happiness. Cat kneading often happens when their favorite person (you!) is petting them, and they start the motion without even thinking about it. They're signaling to you that they feel safe and happy—just like they did when they were nursing kittens.

Short answer: yes. When their needs for companionship are not met, cats can become depressed. They can also get separation anxiety. Unfortunately, feline separation anxiety often goes unnoticed until it becomes severe.
In most cases, experts say giving your pets hard water probably won't cause any problems. The minerals in hard water (calcium, magnesium, and iron) shouldn't lead to any health issues. However, some veterinarians do advise against giving cats and dogs untreated tap water, and that's not because of the minerals.
