After the Sith were decimated by the Jedi Knights of a thousand years ago, Bane enacted the Sith rule of two: there would be only two active Sith at one time -- a Dark Lord to embody the power, and an apprentice to crave it.
Having seen the greed of the Siths destroy their order, Bane created the Rule of Two, stating there would be only a master and an apprentice, two Sith lords at a time. The apprentice would then destroy his master, before taking the next apprectice. Therefore, fighting among Sith could not take place.
The decree commanded that only two Sith Lords must exist at any given time: a master to represent the power of the dark side of the Force, and an apprentice to crave it and train under the master and to one day fulfill their role.
There are dozens of canon Jedi in the Star Wars universe. Opposing them stand the canonical servants of the Dark Side of the Force: The Sith. While many Sith Lords in Star Wars are mentioned, only six are detailed in canon: Bane, Plagueis, Sidious, Maul, Tyranus, and Vader.
Even though Kylo Ren uses a red lightsaber, harnesses the dark side of the Force, and wears a cape, he is not a Sith. Because of that, he can never hold the title of Darth. Instead, he was just a chaotic mess of the dark side (until he eventually found his way back to the light).
By the time of the One Sith, the "Darth" title was reserved only for those who proved their power and their unquestioning loyalty to Darth Krayt.
1 Darth Sidious
There has been no Sith, as powerful, meticulous, nor as evil as the Emperor himself, Darth Sidious. As previously mentioned, Sidious trained in the Dark Side by Darth Plagueis before Sidious killed Plagueis in his sleep, making Sidious a Sith Master.
