AirPods 3 are generally considered an upgrade over AirPods 2 due to features like Spatial Audio, Adaptive EQ, and sweat resistance, but some users prefer the older AirPods 2 sound for its warmer tone or better seal, while others find the AirPods Pro 2 (with noise cancellation) or Pro 3 (with Live Translation) superior to both for specific features, though opinions vary widely on audio quality and fit for all models.
AirPods Pro 2 sound noticeably better than AirPods 3, especially at higher volumes. That being said I own both and enjoy them for different use cases. AirPods 3 for casual listening at home, and for calls/meetings. AirPods Pro for more active listening or when ANC is needed and used when out of the house.
As I said, these buds are significantly improved in the four most important areas: fit, sound quality, noise cancellation and battery life. The result is that you don't feel like you're making any compromises when buying the AirPods Pro 3 if you're an Apple user.
The Airpods 3 defnitely fit differently than the Airpods 2. They are a more snug fit. They are more bulb shaped similar to the Airpods Pro shape, except of course the 3's don't have the tips like the Pros do. I would say test them out first if you can.
The combination of flawless voice activation and lightweight wearability with sweat/water resistance (IPX4) also made them favorable for exercising. Now that the AirPods Pro 3 have launched with advanced health features and a new ergonomic design, it would seem a safe bet that I would make them my next gym partner.
Depending on your ear size, this can be less comfortable than the smaller earbuds of the 2nd gen. Personally, I prefer the larger AirPods 3rd gen due to a more secure fit in my ears, but I can see why it would be more uncomfortable for smaller ears.
Check the fit and choose the best ear tip size
To check the ear tip fit, wear your AirPods for 10 to 15 minutes during normal activity, such as walking. Observe how they feel in your ears. AirPods ear tips that are too small feel loose or fall out when you move your head.

Because they fit securely, earbuds with ear hooks are also popular for workouts. One factor to look out for with ear hooks is interference with eyewear or bike helmets, which can make earbuds with wings a better option.
Fit, Comfort, and Build Quality
Comfort is subjective, but there was a clear preference for the AirPods Pro 3 in a blind test during our review period. The Pro 3 feel more comfortable and secure, unless your ears are sensitive to deeper-fitting in-ear designs compared to the AirPods Pro 2.
Try inserting the AirPods with the medium-sized ear tips in your ears so that the AirPods are seated comfortably and securely. If you can't get a good seal, try adjusting the AirPod or switch to a larger ear tip. If the ear tip feels too large in your ear or is uncomfortable, try a smaller ear tip.
With the active Hearing Protection feature, you can use your AirPods to help protect your hearing in loud environments. If you're in a loud environment like a live sporting event or fitness class, you can use your AirPods to help reduce your exposure to loud sounds around you.
