Many parents begin to pause before responding, or allow children to cry during bedtime without running to their sides around this age to teach children to sleep on their own. Even using this method, many suggest that babies should not be allowed to cry for more than 10 minutes without your attention.
Colic is the main cause of recurrent crying during the early months. All babies have some normal fussy crying every day. When this occurs over 3 hours per day, it's called colic.
For example, if a baby is in pain: they may cry or whimper and be unable to settle. they may be tense, with clenched fists and may keep their arms and legs close to their chest. they may be fidgety, agitated or have an disturbed wake / sleep schedule.
All newborns cry and get fussy sometimes. It's normal for a baby to cry for 2–3 hours a day for the first 6 weeks. During the first 3 months of life, they cry more than at any other time.
It's OK to let your baby cry if the baby doesn't seem sick and you've tried everything to soothe your baby. You can try to leave your baby alone in a safe place, such as a crib, for about 10 to 15 minutes. Many babies need to cry before they can fall asleep.

How Much Crying Is Too Much? No guidelines exist that determine how much people should or should not cry. Studies indicate that women tend to shed more emotional tears than men. One study found that women cried an average of 5.3 times per month while men cried 1.4 times during the same period.

Features of colic may include the following: Intense crying that may seem more like screaming or an expression of pain. Crying for no apparent reason, unlike crying to express hunger or the need for a diaper change. Extreme fussiness even after crying has diminished.
Blue baby syndrome, also known as cyanosis, is when your baby's skin has a bluish discoloration, especially when they cry. The discoloration is most obvious in your baby's lips and hands. This condition is caused when there is a shortage of oxygen in your baby's blood.
When the baby is given medication to treat symptoms of colic, it reinforces the idea that there is something wrong with the baby, when in fact, the baby is going through a very normal developmental phase. That is why we prefer to refer to this time as the Period of PURPLE Crying.
A baby "should simply be allowed to 'cry it out'. This often requires an hour, and in extreme cases, two or three hours. A second struggle will seldom last more than 10 or 15 minutes and a third will rarely be necessary."
