Lemon Juice
While we humans love a great citrus fruit smell, cockroaches are absolutely repulsed by it. This is excellent news for those who want to get rid of cockroaches. Simply mix lemon juice and water and spray it around your home.
You may love the smell of fresh citrus, but cockroaches hate the scent. That means you can use citrus scented cleaners in your kitchen and bathroom to chase any lingering roaches away. You can also keep a few citrus peels around your home in strategic places.
Don't try: Citrus liquids or herbs
Another Internet false claim to avoid. Some people have written that citrus water, herbs or even essential oils can stave off cockroaches from your home. This is just another myth busted by pest control experts.
Distilled vinegar does not kill or repel roaches, making it completely ineffective. Distilled vinegar will help keep your kitchen clean, giving cockroaches less to snack on. However, roaches can live for months at a time without any food at all, and they will eat almost anything to survive.
Studies have found a boric acid and sugar combination to be a very effective killer of roaches, but more readily available is Borax mixed with sugar, which also gets the job done. Simply mix three parts Borax to one part sugar for bait, and be sure to keep your pets out of the vicinity.
Roach Repellents
Peppermint oil, cedarwood oil, and cypress oil are essential oils that effectively keep cockroaches at bay. Additionally, these insects hate the smell of crushed bay leaves and steer clear of coffee grounds. If you want to try a natural way to kill them, combine powdered sugar and boric acid.
Keep pests away
Many common insects such as ants, spiders and cockroaches are sensitive to smell, which is why lemons are so useful at deterring these and other insect pests. Mix a 50/50 solution of lemon juice and water in a spray bottle and use in your kitchen, baseboards and windowsills.
If you really want to go above and beyond, mix a solution of 2 parts water, 1 part baking soda, and a few drops of lemon juice. Place it in a spray bottle and lightly spray the solution in areas you've seen roaches the past few days.
