For a 3-week-old, there's no strict bedtime; sleep is irregular, often with the longest stretch starting late (10 PM or later), driven by hunger and sleep pressure, not a circadian rhythm, so focus on feeding on demand and recognizing sleep cues rather than a clock-based schedule. Expect frequent night wakings for feeds (every 2-4 hours) as they develop their day/night pattern, which often emerges around 4 weeks old.
The ideal bedtime for newborns starts around 9pm. If we try to get them to bed any time before that, they are likely going to treat it as a nap. Newborns don't have a steady melatonin production; it's basically non-existent. We need to help them into sleep, so their ideal timing is between 9-10pm.
Another sleep training method is the 5-3-3 method, or 5-3-3 rule. This technique involves setting a specific sleep schedule where a baby is asleep for five hours, awake for three hours, and then asleep for an additional three hours.
Unless your baby isn't gaining weight or you have been told by a medical practitioner that you need to feed every 3 hours, you can let baby sleep as long as they want at night. They will wake when hungry.
You do not need to bathe your newborn every day – 2 or 3 times a week should be fine. However, if you and your baby both enjoy it, there's no reason you cannot give them a daily bath.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, infants should generally not spend more than two hours in their car seat at a time.* Think about it. You probably get fidgety after sitting for 2 hours — and remember, as an adult your movement is less restricted when using a lap-and-shoulder seat belt.
TEN MINUTE RULE
If the baby cries for 10 minutes straight (a break is considered 10 seconds of them not crying), then you go in and reassure them (WITHOUT PICKING THEM UP!) that everything is okay, he's safe, and you're going to be there when he wakes up.
SIDS is less common after 8 months of age, but parents and caregivers should continue to follow safe sleep practices to reduce the risk of SIDS and other sleep-related causes of infant death until baby's first birthday. More than 90% of all SIDS deaths occur before 6 months of age.
Find your child's “sleep sweet spot”, then stick to it – for babies younger than 12 weeks, bedtime should be around 9PM to 10PM. Babies older than 12 weeks do best with bedtime around 7PM to 8PM.
For most babies, the witching hour starts to occur around 2-3 weeks and peaks at 6 weeks. It will typically completely resolve by 3-4 months.
Typically, healthcare providers recommend a baby 3-months-old and younger eats every 2 or 3 hours (slightly more if formula-fed) and never go more than 4-5 hours at most without being woken to feed. Speak to your healthcare provider to see if you should wake them up even sooner.
The 5-3-3 rule is a loose guideline for structuring a baby's sleep schedule: 5 hours of wake time before the first nap, 3 hours of wake time before the second nap, and 3 hours before bedtime.
The first hour after birth, the “Golden Hour”, when a healthy baby is calmly placed skin-to-skin on the mother's chest, not only facilitates a smooth transition from the womb to the outside world, stabilising the baby physiologically, but also offers a unique opportunity for the mother and baby to connect emotionally ( ...
As your baby passes through the milestones of learning to self-soothe, outgrowing colic, and sleeping through the night, parenting your newborn will get easier. While it'll get easier with each passing day, you can expect caring for your newborn will be much easier by the time they're about 3 months old.
The idea is that you'll have gradually increasing wake times between naps, with two hours before the first, three hours after that, and four hours just before bedtime. It's designed for babies who can do with just two naps a day, a stage that usually occurs between six and 18 months old.
Multiple studies have shown that babies who are swaddled correctly tend to sleep longer and more soundly. They experience fewer spontaneous awakenings, especially in the early months when their startle reflex is strongest.
