Pink beach water is generally caused by the presence of microscopic marine organisms that produce red or pink pigments. This can occur in the water itself due to blooms, or in the sand from the remains of organisms.
The extremely halophilic alga Dunaliella salina can also colour saline waters pink. Although these algae are mainly responsible for the pink colouration of some saline lakes (e.g. Cane, 1962) and they are widespread in saline environments, halophilic bacteria are also usually present (Brock, 1979).
These lakes become blushing beauties thanks to high salinity levels, combined with the presence of salt-loving algae and the pink halobacteria. The lack of water causes the salt to be more concentrated, brightening the colour.
The leading contributor is the Foraminifera, microscopic marine organisms that live among Bermuda's coral reefs. Their pink or red shells, rich in calcium carbonate, mix with the island's white sand when they die, giving the beaches their signature blush hue.
Pink water is likely from potassium permanganate, a chemical used to treat water systems. This chemical is used to remove bacterial growth, dissolved iron minerals, toxic compounds, manganese and hydrogen sulphide, which can cause your tap water to smell like rotten eggs.
