The letter ض reached many languages from Arabic as a “z” sound. Urdu, Sindhi, Farsi, Punjabi, Turkish, and even English⁸ (at the time when this fatwa was written) all received and perceived the ض and ظ as approximately the same sound. Many dialects of Arabic still preserve the ض as a “z” sound.
