To stop a leg cramp immediately, gently stretch the muscle, such as pulling your toes toward your head for a calf cramp, then massage the area, apply heat or cold, and consider walking it off; hydration with electrolytes can also help prevent future cramps.
Stretch the cramped muscle and gently rub it. For a calf cramp, keep the leg straight while pulling the top of your foot on the side that's cramped toward your face. Also try standing with your weight on your cramped leg and pressing down firmly. This helps ease a cramp in the back of the thigh too.
Self care
Steroids will deplete the body of potassium and one symptom of low potassium is muscle cramps. When I am taking steroids, I make sure that I eat LOTS and LOTS of foods high in potassium. Some of my favorites include bananas, orange juice, raisins, spinach, apricots, cantalope. Here is a list of foods high in potassium.
Stretching and massaging the muscle may ease the pain during a cramp, although most cramps go away without you doing anything. Standing up and putting your weight on the leg with the cramp may also help.
For leg cramps, drink fluids with electrolytes like coconut water, milk, or sports drinks (Gatorade, Pedialyte), focusing on potassium and sodium, but plain water is also key for dehydration; consider a small amount of pickle juice for rapid relief if needed, and avoid dehydrating drinks like alcohol and excessive caffeine.
When should I see my doctor? If leg cramps are bothering you during your pregnancy or they are persistent and not going away, talk to your doctor or midwife. Leg pain can sometimes be a sign of a blood clot.
Common side effects
Muscle pain and tenderness has been reported with steroid use but it is not common. If you are concerned talk with your doctor. Generally because the site of injection is specific steroid injections are usually well tolerated and side effects are minimal especially when compared with oral steroids.
Prednisone usually achieves its effect within 1–2 hours. The delayed release tablets take about 6 hours after taking the dose. Prednisone stops working soon after stopping the medication.
Other health issues that can sometimes be linked to night leg cramps include:
Due to their electrolytes, sports drinks like a Gatorade, Vitamin Water, or Powerade might help ease period pain. Electrolytes take care of the electrical activities in muscles, and hydrating them helps relax the muscle, which, in turn, can help alleviate cramps.
See your health care provider if: Menstrual cramps disrupt your life every month. Your symptoms progressively worsen. You just started having severe menstrual cramps after age 25.
Self-care like stretching, heat, and massage can help with discomfort in the moment, while stretching and drinking enough water may prevent cramps from happening. If your pain is intense or your muscle cramps keep coming back, talk to your doctor.
If you suddenly develop pain from an injury, use the RICER method:
A charley horse is the common name for a muscle spasm or cramp. Muscle spasms can occur in any muscle in the body, but often happen in the leg.
Compared to cortisone injections, PRP therapy offers several advantages: Reduced risk of side effects: PRP is derived from the patient's own blood, minimizing the risk of allergic reactions or other adverse effects.
Most leg cramps are harmless, often caused by muscle overuse, stress, or dehydration, and can usually be relieved with stretching, massage, or heat/cold. Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a serious blood flow condition that can sometimes be mistaken for leg cramps but causes pain with activity, not at night.
Orphenadrine (Norflex®): Treats muscle spasms and relieves pain and stiffness in muscles. Verapamil: A calcium-channel blocker. Magnesium. Gabapentin (neurontin): An anticonvulsant and nerve pain medication.
If you take oral corticosteroids for a long time, your adrenal glands may produce less of their natural steroid hormones. To give your adrenal glands time to recover this function, your provider may reduce your dose gradually.
What may interact with this medication?
Many people enjoy the benefits of prednisone and other corticosteroids which are powerful anti-inflammatory drugs that can reduce pain and discomfort related to allergic reactions, arthritis, autoimmune conditions and more. In some cases, they even elevate mood, creating a sense of euphoria and excessive energy.
Leg pain can signal various diseases, often related to poor blood flow (like Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) or Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)), nerve issues (like Sciatica, Diabetic Neuropathy, or Restless Legs Syndrome), joint/bone problems (like Arthritis or infections), or muscle conditions, with symptoms varying from exercise-induced cramping to persistent aching, swelling, or numbness.
Seek medical care right away if you have: Severe cramping that continues. Night leg cramps after coming into contact with a toxin, such as lead.
Symptoms of dystonia
Dystonia can affect your whole body or just 1 part. It can start at any age. Symptoms of dystonia include: uncontrolled muscle cramps and spasms.
