The last days or hours of a person's life are sometimes called the terminal phase. This is when someone is "actively dying". Everyone's experience of dying is different, and some people will die suddenly or unexpectedly.
As the end of life approaches, there is a feeling of detachment from the physical world and a loss of interest in things formerly found pleasurable. There is a tendency to sleep more. There is less desire to talk. This is the beginning of letting go of life and preparing for death.

There are four major stages of death a dying individual experiences and those are; social, psychological, biological and physiological. Social death is the symbolic death of the patient in the world the patient has known.

At Stage 5 CKD, there is usually no cure and you cannot reverse the damage to kidney function. There are treatment options for kidney failure that can help you live life.
EOL or End of Life refers to a product being retired. Retirement can involve completely pulling the product from the market without replacing it or, in many cases, replacing it with a new version.
Final Weeks of Life
Increase in the need to sleep, having to spend the large majority of the day in bed/resting. Difficulty eating or swallowing fluids. A decrease in the patient's ability to communicate and/or concentrate. A general lack of interest in things that used to interest them, and a strong feeling of apathy.
Depending on the nature of the illness and your loved one's circumstances, this final stage period may last from a matter of weeks or months to several years.
End-of-life transition refers to a person's journey to death, especially in those with a terminal diagnosis. This process occurs differently for everyone. For some, it takes days or weeks; for others, it occurs rapidly. Partnering with a trusted medical team during this time can limit pain.
Palliative care is for anyone living with a serious illness at any stage, including the day of diagnosis, while end-of-life care is for the last few weeks or months of life. Palliative care is intended to help patients live more comfortably with their ongoing condition.
The first organ system to “close down” is the digestive system. Digestion is a lot of work! In the last few weeks, there is really no need to process food to build new cells. That energy needs to go elsewhere.
Although it can include end of life care, palliative care is much broader and can last for longer. Having palliative care doesn't necessarily mean that you're likely to die soon – some people have palliative care for years.
What happens in the hours before death? In the hours before death, most people fade as the blood supply to their body declines further. They sleep a lot, their breathing becomes very irregular, and their skin becomes cool to the touch.
The seventh and final stage is extreme old age or a second childhood. Like babies very old men are dependent on others and have no teeth. The old man loses his memory, hearing and control of his senses before dying.
Irregular breathing, panting and periods of not breathing may occur. Changes in breathing are very common and indicate a decrease in circulation to the internal organs. While these changes are not usually bothersome to the patient, they can be distressing to family members. Elevating the head may provide relief.
Breathlessness and shortness of breath are also common symptoms at the end of life. Additionally, as dying patients get closer to their last day, they may experience what's known as the death rattle. Over time, mucus and fluids get trapped in your airways and lungs, causing a rattling sound when you breathe.
Terminal agitation is typically seen during the hours or days before death and can be distressing and overwhelming for caregivers.
Physical signs
They might close their eyes frequently or they might be half-open. Facial muscles may relax and the jaw can drop. Skin can become very pale. Breathing can alternate between loud rasping breaths and quiet breathing.
The person will usually slip slowly into complete unconsciousness. They can't be woken at all but may still be able to hear and be aware of the people around them. Each person's death is individual, just as their life is. For some people, dying may include restlessness.
Activity usually decreases significantly in one's final days and hours and it's natural to sleep more, even during the day. Another common end-of-life change is that people may not respond to questions and may also show little interest in their surroundings. Let your loved one sleep and remain peaceful.
People are considered to be approaching the end of life when they are likely to die within the next 12 months, although this is not always possible to predict. This includes people whose death is imminent, as well as people who: have an advanced incurable illness, such as cancer, dementia or motor neurone disease.
A just in case box contains drugs that can be used to control symptoms that may occur. It usually contains something for pain relief, restllessness and agitation and for control of excess secretions. Should distressing symptoms happen the appropriate drug can be given quickly.
A life cycle ends when an organism dies. In general, plants and animals go through three basic stages in their life cycles, starting as a fertilized egg or seed, developing into an immature juvenile, and then finally transforming into an adult.
