Strokes occur when blood flow to a part of the brain is cut off or drastically reduced, causing brain cells to die. If a stroke isn't caught early, it can cause permanent brain damage or death.
“Ignoring any stroke sign could be a deadly mistake,” says Mitch Elkind, M.D., chair of the American Stroke Association. The Association recommends calling for emergency help immediately, even if the symptoms go away. Acting fast can improve your chances of accurate diagnosis, treatment and recovery.
Part of the brain is robbed of the oxygen and blood supply it needs to function, because a blood vessel to part of the brain either has a clot or blockage, or bursts. The longer a stroke goes untreated, the more brain cells die. But there are treatments that can be given if a person reaches the hospital in time.

Pre-strokes or mini strokes are the common terms used to describe a transient ischemic attack (TIA). Unlike a full blown stroke, a TIA only lasts a few minutes and does not cause permanent damage. Nevertheless it is a warning sign that a possible stroke may be coming in the future.
If you think you are having a stroke and you are alone, then you need to conduct the FAST test immediately. At the slightest sign of a stroke, call 911. The sooner you speak to a 911 operator, the better because the stroke could soon take away your ability to communicate at all.
“If you have an inability to speak words, notice food or liquid falling out of your mouth due to facial droop, you could be having a stroke. If you experience numbness in your face or extremities, can't move an arm or leg or have a sudden onset of double vision or dizziness — those are other possible stroke symptoms.”

During a CT scan, the patient may be intravenously injected with dyes, which will highlight any abnormal areas in the scan, giving doctors a clearer view of the head.
Strokes may not be seen on a CT scan for several reasons. It can sometimes take several hours for the brain to appear abnormal after the onset of stroke. The affected region may also be a part of the brain that CT scans do not image well, such as the cerebellum or the brainstem.
You will likely have a head CT scan or brain MRI. A stroke may show changes on these tests, but TIAs will not.
