Love admits her first husband, James, wanted to leave after she cared for him throughout a bout with cancer. She gives James aconite, also known as wolfsbane, hoping to paralyze him long enough that the two of them could “talk through” their problems. But she misjudges the dosage and kills James instead.
He returns home to stage Love's death as a brutal murder-suicide and sends a suicide letter, presumably written by Love, to the Madre Linda Homeowner's Association.
James Kennedy is portrayed by Daniel Durant. He was Love's late husband; they were married in July of 2016. He developed cancer, which Love saw him through. It is originally believed that he died shortly after, but later it is revealed that he went into remission, and decided that he wanted to leave Love.

Joe uses this opportunity to grab the kitchen knife from the platter in case he has to defend himself. It turns out that Love coated the knife handle in aconite, a paralytic that can be deadly — the same poison she used to kill her ex-husband. Love never touched the knife herself.

What happens to Henry in You season 3? In the final episode of You season 3, Joe poisons and kills Love, but before that he gives baby Henry away to a couple who is better fit to parent. He drops off Henry at Dante's (Ben Mehl) house, one of his co-workers at the library who seems like a good person.
