Healthy period blood typically varies from bright red to dark brown or black. Blood or discharge that is orange or grey may indicate an infection. Women who experience bleeding during pregnancy should see a doctor or obstetrician for an evaluation.
Bright red blood: As your uterus starts to actively shed blood during your period, you may notice that the color is bright red. This just means that your blood is fresh and has not been in the uterus or vagina for some time. Dark red blood: Dark red blood is simply blood that has been in the vagina for longer.
If you have noticed different colors in your period blood, it's usually normal. In most cases, the color change relates to how long the blood has been in the uterus. Your flow will change how long the blood remains in your uterus. You may see bright red blood on your heaviest days and brown blood on your lightest days.
Menstrual flow also can look different over the course of the same period. Blood may start out bright red and turn darker red or brown toward the end of the period. Or blood may start out brown and turn red. And differences in texture, like blood clots and tissue, can happen as the uterus sheds its extra lining.
Black blood can appear at the beginning or end of a person's period. The color is typically a sign of old blood or blood that has taken longer to leave the uterus and has had time to oxidize, first turning brown or dark red and then eventually becoming black.
Although men will not bleed, nor will they experience all of the same symptoms as women, these hormonal shifts can have some pretty notable side effects, especially with mood and irritability. Some call it the “man period” others call it Irritable Male Syndrome, either way, it can be quite similar to a woman's PMS.
Pink or brown discharge or spotting before a period may be an early sign of pregnancy. Not every pregnant person will experience this symptom, but some do. This discharge is caused by implantation bleeding that can happen when the fertilized egg burrows into the uterus lining.
Women with very dark menstrual blood may have difficulties with fertility and conceiving, and may also put the mother at a greater risk for clotting problems that can affect the placenta in pregnancy.
Black discharge can be an early sign of pregnancy. It may be caused by implantation bleeding or mild bleeding as a result of the fertilized egg attaching itself to the wall of the uterus. If you suspect you are pregnant, wait until the day of your missed period, or 1-2 days later before taking a home pregnancy test.
There is a possibility that what is normal for one can be different for another but in general, bright red colour is considered as a healthy period colour.
Period blood tends to appear brown near the start and end of your period. At the start of your period, flow is typically light, which can result in period blood that isn't very red. It can also be the result of tiny amounts of blood leftover from your previous period.
Period blood that's bright red and watery can be fresh blood coming straight from your uterus. This may indicate an injury or a miscarriage. Seek medical attention if you notice bright red, watery blood coming from your uterus, especially, if there's a chance you might be pregnant.
Bleeding during miscarriage can appear brown and resemble coffee grounds. Or it can be pink to bright red. It can alternate between light and heavy or even stop temporarily before starting up again. If you miscarry before you're eight weeks pregnant, it might look the same as a heavy period.
Black spotting and bleeding may also be a sign of a missed miscarriage, which is when the embryo stops developing but isn't expelled by the body for four weeks or more. Between 10 and 20 percent of pregnancies may end in miscarriage. Most happen before the fetus reaches 10 weeks' gestation.
Hormonal changes
Hormonal changes, which can happen with thyroid problems or menopause, can cause small amounts of dark period blood. This change is also very common when switching birth control or when recently post-partum women start weaning from breastfeeding.

It might be helpful to use a calendar and label days as pasty, creamy, wet or dry. You're most fertile around the time your mucus becomes slippery and wet, like raw egg whites. Once you see this type of mucus, it's time to have sex if conception is your goal.
Not everyone will experience implantation bleeding, but for those who do, it's usually one of the first symptoms of pregnancy. Implantation bleeding is usually light pink to dark brown. It's different from your usual menstrual period because it's only light spotting.
Menstruation. Brown spotting is often just sign of ovulation or your actual period starting.
Pregnancy
But if you experience brown spotting or bleeding, recently had unprotected sex and your period is late by more than a few days, it's a good idea to take a pregnancy test.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
This extended time between periods can result in brown discharge. You might also experience ovarian cysts and brown discharge between periods due to missed ovulation. Other symptoms of PCOS may include: headaches.
Naturally declining reproductive hormones.
In your 40s, your menstrual periods may become longer or shorter, heavier or lighter, and more or less frequent, until eventually — on average, by age 51 — your ovaries stop releasing eggs, and you have no more periods.
It's possible for sex to kick-start your period, but only if you have an orgasm during it and are nearing your start date. If you notice bleeding after sex, there may be another reason why. Infections, vaginal tears, ovulation, and cancer are some reasons you might bleed after sex.
When deciding whether to use pads or tampons, it's really up to you. Many girls start out using pads, but might want to use tampons when they do sports or go swimming. Tampons also are easy to store in a purse or pocket. Another advantage to tampons is that they can't be felt because they're inside the body.
You know how long and heavy your typical period is. During a miscarriage, bleeding gets heavier and lasts longer than a period. As your cervix starts to dilate, cramping may become more painful than typical period cramping.
