The risk of miscarriage drops significantly as pregnancy progresses. In one study, researchers found a miscarriage rate of 9.4 percent at 6 weeks of pregnancy, 4.2 percent at 7 weeks, 1.5 percent at 8 weeks, 0.5 percent at 9 weeks and 0.7 percent at 10 weeks.
Most miscarriages - 8 out of 10 (80 percent) - happen in the first trimester before the 12th week of pregnancy. Miscarriage in the second trimester (between 13 and 19 weeks) happens in 1 to 5 in 100 (1 to 5 percent) pregnancies. Pregnancy loss that happens after 20 weeks is called stillbirth.
Research amongst women with a history of recurrent miscarriage has shown that while those who reached six weeks of pregnancy had a 78% chance of the pregnancy continuing, seeing a heartbeat at 8 weeks increased the chance of a continuing pregnancy to 98% and at 10 weeks that went up to 99.4%.
What causes miscarriage? Chromosomal abnormalities cause about 50% of all miscarriages in the first trimester (up to 13 weeks) of pregnancy. Chromosomes are tiny structures inside the cells of your body that carry your genes.
Early miscarriages
An early miscarriage happens in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Most women who miscarry do so in the first 12 weeks of their pregnancy. Many women have a miscarriage before they even know they're pregnant. If this happens it can feel like a late period with heavy bleeding.
Chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus are the most often cause of missed miscarriages, since these abnormalities do not allow the pregnancy to develop. If a miscarriage has occurred early in pregnancy, you will often be able to expel the pregnancy tissue naturally.
The most conclusive way of finding out is to have an ultrasound done by your doctor or midwife to see baby's heartbeat. I say "most" conclusive, because even with an ultrasound, if you are early in your pregnancy, it can be difficult to see or detect a heartbeat with 100% accuracy.
You at 10 weeks
Pregnant women and their babies are at higher risk from flu (influenza) and whooping cough (pertussis). You're advised to have a flu vaccination in pregnancy and whooping cough vaccination in pregnancy to protect you and your baby.
Here's the good news: According to a study, after an ultrasound confirms baby's heartbeat at eight weeks, the risk of miscarriage is about 3 percent.
By seven to ten weeks, you a transvaginal ultrasound should be able to pick up a fetal heartbeat.
This is called an anembryonic pregnancy, which is also known as a blighted ovum. Or it may be that your baby started to grow, but then stopped growing and they have no heartbeat. Occasionally it happens beyond the first few weeks, perhaps at eight weeks or 10 weeks, or even further on.
As sometimes during the first trimester, usually around 6 to 10 weeks, the embryo quits developing and the heartbeat stops.
According to one study, once a pregnancy gets past 6/7 weeks and has a heartbeat, the risk of having a miscarriage drops to around 10%.
Miscarriage After Fetal Heartbeat
Most doctors agree that seeing a fetal heartbeat on ultrasound means the risk of miscarriage is much lower. Confirmation of a fetal heartbeat means that the baby has passed the initial stages of development wherein the majority of first trimester miscarriages occur.
The heartbeat does not develop until 6.5–7 weeks of gestation, so the absence of a heartbeat before this time does not indicate a loss. To confirm a pregnancy loss, a doctor may choose to perform scans on multiple days.
Choose fish that are lower in mercury. These include salmon, rainbow trout, pollock, herring, shrimp, mussels, clams, oysters, and canned "light" tuna. Avoid foods that could harm your baby. Do not eat raw or undercooked meat, chicken, or fish (such as sushi or raw oysters).
Your pregnancy symptoms in week 11
Your hormones and the extra blood your body's pumping can leave you feeling hotter than you would normally feel. Drink plenty of water and wear layers that you can remove if you're feeling too hot. Some women also feel colder than usual in pregnancy.
The nuchal translucency screening — also called the NT screening — is a specialized ultrasound performed between weeks 11 and 13 that screens for chromosomal conditions like Down syndrome, trisomy 18 and trisomy 13 by measuring the level of fluid at the base of the fetus' neck.
Signs and symptoms of a miscarriage might include: Vaginal spotting or bleeding. Pain or cramping in your abdomen or lower back. Fluid or tissue passing from your vagina.
After a heartbeat has been detected at the eight-week scan, the chance of a miscarriage drops to only 2%. The chance falls to below 1% after 10 weeks. Though a missed miscarriage can be detected after a 12-week scan, the chances are much lower at that stage of pregnancy.

Try to remember that your fears are normal, but that this phase will pass. Take time to practice mindfulness, meditation, and take some time for yourself. This could include any stress-reducing activities you enjoy like yoga or going for a walk.
