Disadvantages of male circumcision include surgical risks like bleeding, infection, and anesthesia reactions, potential cosmetic issues, and concerns about pain and psychological impact, with some arguing it leads to decreased sexual sensitivity or satisfaction, though research shows mixed results, while others highlight potential benefits like reduced STI risk, making it a complex decision balancing medical, ethical, and personal factors.
The most common risks of circumcision are bleeding and infection. With bleeding, it's typical to see a few drops of blood from the surgical wound. Bleeding often stops on its own or with a few minutes of gentle direct pressure. Worse bleeding needs to be checked by a healthcare professional.
Preferences differ widely. Some women prefer circumcised men for perceived cleanliness, while others like uncircumcised men for sensitivity and natural appearance. Overall, most women care more about comfort, hygiene, and emotional connection than whether a man is cut or not.
Circumcision results in several important health advantages over the lifetime. Benefits include protection against HIV and AIDS, human papillomavirus, other sexually transmitted infections, genital cancer, and severe infant urinary tract infections.
The results you experience from adult circumcision will largely depend on the reason you had the procedure in the first place. If you chose to have it to stop or prevent infections or physical issues like phimosis, the procedure is typically very successful. You may not experience these again in the future.
Circumcision can be done at any age.
You may have pain or burning when you urinate. You may also have trouble starting to urinate. These symptoms should get better with time. It will help to drink plenty of fluids.
Credible research shows that most women prefer the appearance of the circumcised penis. They also prefer it for sexual activity. Hygiene is one reason; increased contact of the penis with the vaginal wall, and thus greater stimulation, are others.
Medical reasons to not circumcise
Like the benefits, the risks are small but worth considering carefully. Complications from circumcision surgery are rare, but like all surgeries, there are some risks—including bleeding, infection and injury to the penis or urethra.
For those circumcised (n = 91), the median regret score was 0 (IQR 0–25). For those uncircumcised (n = 28), median regret score was 0 (IQR 0–24). Overall, 55% of both groups reported no regret (DRS = 0), 24% had low-mild regret (DRS 5–25), and 21% yielded moderate-strong regret (DRS 30–100).
An uncircumcised penis has a foreskin covering its head, while on a circumcised penis, the head is exposed. Research has shown there are no differences in how an uncircumcised penis and a circumcised penis respond to touch stimulation and orgasm. Similarly, circumcision doesn't affect sexual function or fertility.
An uncircumcised penis retains the foreskin, which covers the head of a nonerect penis. When the penis is erect, the foreskin pulls back to reveal the glans. A circumcised penis has no foreskin, which exposes the glans when the penis is both erect and nonerect.
When you're discharged from hospital, you'll be given advice about your recovery at home, including when you can drive, return to work and have sex. It usually takes at least 10 days for your penis to heal after circumcision. You'll probably be advised to take at least 1 week off work to recover.

The American Urological Association, Inc. ® (AUA) believes that neonatal circumcision has potential medical benefits and advantages as well as disadvantages and risks. Neonatal circumcision is generally a safe procedure when performed by an experienced operator.
Among our patients, when asked about pain during circumcision performed under local anesthesia on a scale 1-10 with 1 being no pain, and 10 being the worst pain of your life, more than 90% of patients rate pain as 2-3. Most patients do not take prescribed pain medications or any other pain medications.
There are also many relative indications for circumcision, including the prevention of penile and cervical cancer, the prevention of sexually transmitted infection, particularly HIV, and the prevention of urinary tract infection. Many surgeons would also perform a circumcision during surgery for hypospadias.
A common reason for parents to not circumcise their baby is their wish for the child to choose when they are older, reflecting current ethical debates on bodily autonomy. Other reasons include concerns about possible safety, risk of bleeding or infection, pain, later sexual function, or other mild complications.
Cosmetic success varies greatly with all surgical interventions, however, a preputioplasty and a frenuloplasty are less invasive alternatives than a full circumcision or a dorsal slit.
Regarding their female partner's satisfaction, 46.9% reported at 6-month follow-up that their partner was “very pleased” or “somewhat pleased” by their circumcision; 31.3% were neutral and only 0.7% report that their partner was “somewhat” or “very displeased” (Krieger et al., 2008).

If during circumcision excess penile skin, and very little preputial mucosa are excised, then post-circumcision phimosis can be observed. This post-circumcision phimotic glans can be encountered as concealed penis, and micropenis. In these conditions glans penis can not be taken out.
