As they have evolved as prey animals, cows are naturally reactive or fearful in several different situations, including a fear of novelty. As a result cattle can find unfamiliar objects, situations and smells and sudden movements and noises frightening. This is exacerbated when they are solitary or isolated.
The laws of animal behaviour that Grandin has uncovered are not just from her acute observation, but also from her knowledge of neuroscience. The yellow object panics the cows as they approach a tunnel because most mammals have dichromatic vision: they see just blue and green.
They dislike the smells of dung and saliva, so when housed, their feeding area needs to be kept clean and smell fresh, not contaminated with dung, saliva or exudate from other cows' noses.
A cow that's afraid will showcase quick, erratic movements. It will have raised ears and a flicking tail. It may also do one or more of the following – bellow, turn sideways, shake its head and horns and paw the ground.
1\1 y livestock (cattle and horses) show no fear of a fire racing across a pasture. In fact, a few times I was afraid that they might be caught by the flames but with no particular concern they simply move. Horses, cattle and dogs have been seen warming themselves quite near moving flames.

Flies are a huge nuisance for your cows. Cows are absolutely irritated by fly feeding behavior. Because of this, they can become very stressed this time of year. They may also become restless and spend less time lying down when under heavy fly pressure.
Cattle used for wildlife conservation are normally traditional beef breeds. These tend to be smaller and more docile than dairy breeds, especially the bulls. Cattle are naturally scared of you; especially if you have a dog. Try not to startle them as they may panic.
Cows are capable of feeling pain and fear. As a result, they suffer in many ways when they are sent to the slaughterhouse, including being forced to endure long hours of transportation, physical abuse, and painful slaughter methods.
Stressors can be physical or social, for example, high temperature-humidity index, cold environment, animal-human relationship (handling, change in milking staff and other contact people), transportation, moving to a new pen (group changes), overstocking, herd hierarchy, poor cow comfort (flooring, and bedding).
If cows come towards you as a group, they may be curious. Remain calm and continue walking on quietly and quickly, trying to pass around them without making any startling movements. Cows will most likely leave you alone once they realize you are not a threat.
Grass: More than 50 percent of cow feed is actually grass (farmers call it hay and silage). While people often think dairy cows are fed a high-grain diet, in reality they eat the leaves and stems from corn, wheat and oats far more often than they are eating grain, like corn kernels.
Alert the cows to your presence by making a little noise – cows can become aggressive when taken by surprise. If they've gathered round to greet you at the gate, try shooing them away or rattling the gate with a stick or trekking pole.
Cows are more sensitive to noises than humans, especially high pitched noises that can hurt their ears. Remember that high pitched sounds in the wild are used as alarm calls when a predator is around. For example, never yell near or at a cow. Loud noises can scare cows and may cause kicking, charging or running.
And somehow, cows could smell fear. Rod had seen it. When a person was hesitant or acted afraid to catch a calf, the mom would sense the fear and put on an extra show of force. But if the cow-hand was confident and acted as an authority then the cow tended to respect the authority.
The slaughter process has two stages: Stunning, when performed correctly, causes an animal to lose consciousness, so the animal can't feel pain. The law states that, with few exceptions, all animals must be stunned before 'sticking' (neck cutting) is carried out.
Animal behaviorists have found that they interact in socially complex ways, developing friendships over time and sometimes holding grudges against other cows who treat them badly. These gentle giants mourn the deaths of and even separation from those they love, sometimes shedding tears over their loss.
But researchers believe that when cows experience particularly stressful situations, like being stalked or attacked by predators, they can suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.
Cows do seem to enjoy petting, at least some of the time. One study showed that eye-white percentage decreased in cows after gentle petting, which implied increased happiness and relaxation.
“Cows with calves will be protective of their young so you should avoid getting too close. If you mistakenly do, then please don't make a run for it, move away slowly. Don't turn your back on the cattle and don't make eye contact as they can find this intimidating.”
Cows are clever and become bored after some time with provided enrichment. For this reason, it is important to incorporate “switch it up” days into your residents' enrichment schedules.
The National Agricultural Statistics Service summarizes cattle loss data by several specific predator species including coyotes (Figure 1), dogs, mountain lions, bobcats, cougars, pumas, lynx, black vultures, wolves, and bears. Hawks, rattlesnakes, and even fire ants are other species that can cause damage to cattle.
If a cow spends enough positive time with a human, they might start to see them as part of the cow's “herd.” They'll show affection back to humans by licking them, following them around, or even cuddling with them.
