The current Pakistan Army Chief, General Asim Munir, is Sunni Muslim, though rumors circulated online suggesting Shia links, largely stemming from his wife's family background, which he dismissed by highlighting his deep Islamic practice, including memorizing the Quran. While some allege Shia connections through family (like General Munir's wife), the top leadership of the Pakistan Army is predominantly Sunni, aligning with Pakistan's overall Muslim demographic, which is about 85-90% Sunni.
Munir is a Muslim, and he is deemed as a conservative figure regarding religion. Munir's family are locally known as a hafiz family, as its many members are known to have memorized the entire Quran by heart, including Munir, who did so during his posting in Saudi Arabia as a Lieutenant-Colonel.
Major Hercharn Singh (born 1987) is the first Sikh officer to be commissioned in the Pakistan Army. He was born in Nankana Sahib, Pakistan, which is also the birthplace of the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak.

General Asim Munir was removed as {!nav}Director General of ISI in 2019 by then-Prime Minister Imran Khan, reportedly because Munir wanted to investigate corruption allegations involving Khan's wife, Bushra Bibi, leading to a clash between them; Khan later denied this, but Khan's former aide Faisal Vawda stated Munir was removed for "acting honestly". Munir, who was serving an expected three-year term, was reassigned after only eight months, with the army citing no official reason for the sudden reshuffle.
On the other hand, the Army Chief of Pakistan gets a monthly salary of about PKR 2,50,000 i.e. about ₹ 75,000 in Indian rupees. He also gets some government facilities, but their number and quality are considered to be less than that of India.
Religion in Pakistan
Despite the strained ties, Pakistani officials say Sikh and other religious pilgrims from India are still welcome to visit shrines in Pakistan under existing arrangements. Many of Sikhism's holiest sites ended up in Pakistan after the partition of British India in 1947.
