Q: Is it OK to leave my dog unattended in our fenced yard? A: I'm afraid the answer is no, as this can cause all kinds of behavior issues. Dogs may display escape behavior, fence fighting, digging and inappropriate chewing.
Adult dogs
You shouldn't leave your adult dog alone for more than six to eight hours, because they can't hold their bladder for much longer.
If you plan to leave him outdoors, you'll need to ensure he has access to basic needs. Does he have fresh water? Is there ample shade throughout the day as the direct sunlight moves through your yard? Is there a cool place where he can get away from the elements?
As a professional dog trainer, this is easily one of the most common questions that comes up during consultations. Many pet owners assume their dogs would prefer to play outdoors alone, but that's not always true. The simple answer is no; you shouldn't leave your dog outside unattended.
According to the Pet Health Network, there are no really good reasons to keep your dog outside all of the time. "Sadly, often dogs are left outside by dog-owners that aren't putting enough effort into their pets," the site claimed.
While it's not cruel to keep a pet outdoors in mild weather, dogs are pack animals who thrive with companionship and being close to their owners. So it's only natural that they will be happiest spending time with the family. A dog kept solely outside experiences social isolation and may bark or howl out of loneliness.
Not only do dogs love being outdoors because it offers them a sense of that hereditary freedom, but they also can roam and explore. They love a change of scenery.
Most experts agree you shouldn't leave your adult dog alone for more than eight to 10 hours, but some dogs (especially ones with small bladders) can't last that long. DO prepare your dog before you go.
As your puppy gets older gradually increase the total amount of time you leave them alone. Adult dogs are generally okay on their own for 4-6 hours a day. But, many dogs are good at adapting to being alone for 8-9 hours while you are at work if they are provided with enough space to comfortably move around.
As a general rule of thumb, adult dogs can be left alone for up to 6 hours a day. However, the amount of time a dog can spend safely alone will vary from dog to dog, as even the most laid-back dogs may become distressed when you leave them on their own for long periods of time.
Generally speaking, most dogs benefit from anywhere between 30 minutes to two hours of exercise per day. Try to walk for at least 30 minutes per day; depending on the breed, age, and health of your dog, you can increase the length of your walks or the intensity of the physical activity.
It's important to provide your dog with access to shade and water at all times, especially during hot and humid weather. As a general guideline, you should limit your dog's sun exposure to no more than 30 minutes at a time, particularly during the peak sun hours between 10 am and 4 pm.
Give them treats and scatter feed in the yard so they have little surprises to hunt for. Give them bones or a sand pit – whatever they love to do, make sure they spend time outside having a good time on their own with and without you at home. Start with short periods of time (30 seconds) and build it up slowly.
Never leave your dog unattended for long periods of time, this includes overnight. If something happens to your dog such as heatstroke or hypothermia, the longer it goes unattended the worse it will be for him. Always check on him to make sure he has enough water and is not exhibiting any signs of health issues.
Changes in behavior
Destructive behavior is also a symptom of separation anxiety. Dogs are social and typically prefer to be with others. Some may always struggle with being alone. When a dog doesn't know how to self-soothe or cope, they may turn to chewing or clawing stuff around the house, or barking or howling.
As a general rule, your dog should never be left alone for more than four hours at a time. However, this will greatly depend on your dog, their age, breed and how they cope with being on their own in the house. Some may struggle being away from their owners for this long and others will be unphased.
If possible, dogs older than 6 months should not be left alone for longer than 4 hours at a time. If this is difficult, the absolute maximum time for them to be alone is 8 hours, but this is only recommended if your dog has a way to get outside for a bathroom break.
If you have a young puppy or plan to be gone for longer than four hours at a time, consider using a puppy pen instead. A puppy pen will give your puppy a safe area to play and stretch their legs. You can also place a puppy pad in the corner to contain any messes your dog makes while you're at work.
There is some wiggle room, provided that your pooch has access to enough food and water, as well as a place to go potty if they need to. However, even if their basic needs are met, you shouldn't leave your pet alone and unsupervised for more than 8 hours a day.
At 6 months of age he will be able to hold his bladder for 7-8 hours (a work day). No dog of any age should be made to wait longer than 8 hours! Different breeds have different social needs: hounds are extremely social, but some “working” breeds and guard dogs are fine for 10-12 hours.
Consider doggy daycare
If your dogs don't do well at home alone or you work long hours, doggy daycare is an excellent option. Even if it's just a few times a week, daycare can make a huge difference — your pup can socialize with other dogs, play, and get the exercise they need.

Activating your dog's mental muscles
Either way, getting your dog outside will stimulate their sense of smell, prompt their curiosity, and get the blood and hormones pumping through their body and brain. High energy dogs especially need the mental stimulation of play.
While it's important to exercise your dog, it's equally important to make sure they get enough rest to allow them to recover and avoid injuries. This is particularly true after an active day where you've been on a long walk or cani-cross, for example. The occasional rest day can be greatly beneficial for your pup.
Most dogs need at least 1-2 walks per day (unless otherwise specified by your vet). A brisk walk is a great opportunity for your dog to burn off extra energy, and a slow, meandering walk – where you let your dog sniff and explore for as long as they want – is great for their mental health.
