How to tell if an egg has a chick in it. When candling eggs around day 14, you will be able to see a lot more growth of the chick inside the egg. If you still see the same small dark spot and lines like you saw on day 7, then the embryo is no longer growing and the egg needs to be removed.
Most people candle twice:
There is no benefit in eating fertilized eggs. There is no nutritional difference in fertilized eggs and infertile eggs. Most eggs sold today are infertile; roosters are not housed with the laying hens. Fertile eggs with cell development, which is detected during the candling process, are removed from commerce.
Keep an eye out for the following signs:
If you can see blood vessels within the egg, there is a live embryo inside. Blood vessels in chicken eggs are normally observable within 7 to 10 days of an egg's incubation. By 18 days of incubation, the embryo takes up most of the egg and appears as a dark area within the egg.
How to Tell If a Bird Egg Is Alive. If you find a bird egg, gently touch it with the back of your hand. A warm egg is likely still viable. Also, inspect the shell—an intact, undamaged shell suggests the embryo may still be developing.
Candling Method (Day 5–7 of Incubation) Hold the egg against a bright light in a dark room. Fertile eggs show blood vessels and a tiny dark spot (the embryo). Infertile eggs appear clear with only the yolk shadow visible.
First candling: 7 days
After a week of incubation, place your egg onto your egg candler in a darkened room and turn on the light. You should be able to see shadows from inside the egg. With practice, you will identify fertile eggs by the dark dot, the embryo and the spider-like blood veins spreading out around the egg.
PSA: The eggs we eat for breakfast or bake with are NOT fertilized. Egg yolk is not a baby chick. A fertilized chicken egg looks very different on the inside, you get a bloody little baby chick embryo. Tiny beak, etc.
When you crack an unfertilized egg open, you'll see a blastodisc (a whitish small spot on the egg yolk). On the other hand, when you crack a fertilized egg open, you'll see a blastoderm (a whitish spot with a ring surrounding it looking like a bullseye).
Eventually an unhatched egg may be buried or trampled into the nest or even partially consumed by adults or fed to a hatched nestling. The parents may move pieces of shell out of the nest cup.
Don't worry, candling doesn't harm the eggs. A hen naturally leaves the nest for short periods, and taking eggs out of the incubator for a few minutes to candle them is perfectly safe.
On day 20, the chick pierces the membrane into the air chamber. The chick breathes air for the first time, and you may hear the chick peeping inside the egg. This is called pipping. On the 21st day, the chick begins to break out of the shell.
The poultry meat that we eat today comes from meat chickens or so called broilers. They've never laid a single egg. Eggs come from a different kind of chicken: laying hens, raised on a specialized poultry farm. Why don't we eat their meat?
Is it okay to eat eggs from chickens right away or should they lay a few before you consume the eggs? There's nothing wrong, you can start eating them right away.
A yolkless egg is a small egg with no yolk, sometimes produced by a pullet that has only just started laying. These eggs are common and usually pose no harm.
