You can estimate a snail's age by its shell's lip (older snails have thicker, flared lips), shell color (older shells often lighten or whiten), and by counting growth rings or winter breaks in the shell's structure, though precise aging needs lab methods like oxygen isotope analysis. While there's no simple "growth ring" count like trees, these physical signs, along with knowing the species' lifespan (ranging from one year to over a decade), help determine if a snail is young, mature, or old.
The older the snail, the thicker is the lip, the shell colour is lighter and the shell surface, between the lateral lip bases is whiter. The age of the snail can easily be assessed by counting the number of winter breaks and add- ing this to the yearly increments. Fig. 2.
Lifespan. Most species of land snail are annual, others are known to live 2 or 3 years, but some of the larger species may live over 10 years in the wild. For instance, 10-year old individuals of the Roman snail Helix pomatia are probably not uncommon in natural populations.
You can tell that a snail is fully grown because it has a lip on the mouth of its shell. The drawings below show two fully grown snails with lips.
Day 15 – 25. Around two weeks after hatching, the snails develop into juveniles. Once its shell reaches approximately 1.5 centimetres the juvenile snail will start to feed on young rice seedings and other aquatic plants.
Environmental temperature and quality, food accessibility, and amount of day length often determine how fast the snails grow after hatching from an egg. Many species reach full size within a year. Depending on the species, snails can weigh as little as a few ounces and as much as two pounds.
At hatching, it's just a few millimeters long — almost microscopic! It already has a soft, translucent shell — a mini version of what it will grow into. 🐚 Shell Growth. A baby snail's shell is fragile but grows with it as it matures.
As soon as it comes out of the egg, the snail already has its shell. During the development it will grow on the side of its opening. After a few months, the snails reach their adult size and the growth of the shell is slowed down.
Snails are extremely simple creatures so as long as they not hiding in their shells and eating, that should be enough to tell if they are healthy or not. Also, if their shell is cracked or melting, it's a sign of calcium deficiency so look out for that too.
Don't touch the pink eggs. They contain a neurotoxin.
How often should I feed my pond snails? Offer a small portion once every other day. If natural algae and biofilm are abundant, you can stretch to two feeds a week; remove anything uneaten after 12 hours to keep ammonia down.
This mantle is constantly adding layers to the shell allowing it to grow larger as the snail matures but here's the catch. While snails can repair small cracks or chips in their shells, it can't be grown entirely new shell if it's severely damaged or lost.
Caring for your snails
They need a wide varied diet. A few specific things ours love are: leafy greens, carrots, dandelion leaves, cucumber, apple and flowers. We feed them daily. Always clean food before feeding it to them to remove any traces of things that could be harmful for them.
On a female you will see what looks like two holes on either shoulder just under the shell. On a male , you will see the sheath mostly blocking the hole on the snail's right shoulder side (left as you look at the photo on your screen).
People, especially children, should be cautioned not to handle snails and slugs, and if they do to wash their hands thoroughly afterwards. Control of definitive and intermediate hosts, and management of intermediate and paratenic hosts to reduce chances of accidental ingestion, may also be undertaken.
Smell the Shell
Water snails are no exception; once they die, all organisms begin to smell terribly.
As part of their mating ritual (yes, they have a mating ritual), some land snails shoot each other with “love darts”. Researchers previously thought these projectiles of passion might be “gifts” of calcium, but understandings have progressed.
The difference between sleeping and stress is simple: a sleeping snail is in a stable position and will eventually wake up and start moving on its own. A stressed snail stays sealed for days and might smell bad when you gently sniff near the shell opening. Don't panic if your snail hasn't moved all day.
Snail slime is a kind of mucus (an external bodily secretion) produced by snails, which are gastropod mollusks. Land snails and slugs both produce mucus, as does every other kind of gastropod, from marine, freshwater, and terrestrial habitats.
Some species are attractive and interesting to observe, and many hobbyists value them as pets just like fish. But some species reproduce rapidly, and a sudden population explosion can be a surprise, especially if you do not know where they came from.
Test results confirmed a low-level presence of rat lungworm (a parasitic nematode) in both snail species. This parasite can be transmitted to people when snails or slugs are eaten raw or undercooked.
Snails don't actually bite humans, so there is no true “snail bite” in the medical sense. However, contact with a snail—especially larger species—can sometimes cause minor skin reactions that people might mistake for a bite.
If the enclosure is in a cool room, a small basking lamp in a dome over the terrarium can help to raise the temperature on one side. As the glass is only being heated on one side this also creates a small temperature gradient within the enclosure allowing the snail to warm itself up or move away to cool down.
Does a snail recognize its owners? It is unlikely that a snail will recognize its owners as some other pets would. This isn't to say it's impossible, but snails have bad eyesight.
