You can shorten a tote bag strap temporarily with knots, clips, or folding/threading it through hardware, or permanently by sewing in a new shorter length or adding an adjuster, depending on the strap's material (fabric vs. leather/webbing) and if you have hardware like buckles or rings. Simple hacks involve looping the strap through itself or a buckle for instant shortening, while sewing offers a cleaner, more secure, and customizable solution.
One or Two Strap Savers: A single pair of Strap Savers tackles adjustable straps with a simple loop and secure strap shortener method. For non-adjustable straps, you'll need two Strap Savers on each strap to create a secure hold after folding the strap into a Z-shape.
COBBLER CONSULTATION
Upon receipt of your bag, your cobbler will reach out to you for a one-on-one consultation to ensure we shorten your bag's straps exactly the way you want.
Strap drop is the distance from the top of the bag to the top of the strap when worn. For crossbodies, that “drop” approximates where the bag sits on your torso.
Start by measuring the desired length and mark it on the strap. Fold the strap at the marked point and use a sewing machine or hand-sewing needle and thread to sew along the folded part. Finally, trim any excess material beyond the seam and secure the threads by tying knots or using fabric glue.
It's a great solution for those without a sewing machine or in situations where sewing isn't an option. A word of caution, though: unlike stitches that can easily be undone, hem tape creates a near-permanent bond.
For adjustable straps, a single pair of Strap Savers works great with an easy loop and secure method. For non-adjustable straps, use two pairs of Strap Savers to create a firm hold by folding the straps into a Z-shape.
