Thor wanted Zeus and the other gods to help him fight Gorr the Godbutcher (Christian Bale), who—as you can perhaps guess from his name—poses a threat to all the gods. Zeus is uninterested in helping. Thor then kills Zeus using Zeus' own thunderbolt, which (frankly) feels like a bit of an overreaction.
In a Zeus vs Thor scenario, Zeus would probably end up the victor, but the same goes for his son, Hercules. Technically speaking, he's only a demigod, but, if any biceps could outsize Thor's, then it is the Herculators.
So there you have it, Zeus most likely survived just because his weapon was not powerful enough to kill him, especially when it wasn't wielded by its owner.
