(Letters2president.org) The United States is ranked 31 in the world for the toughest animal cruelty laws. Yet 10 million animals die from abuse every year in the US. 60% are dogs, and 18% are cats.
A cat is an easy victim for them to abuse because they can be trusting towards people, cannot speak up for themselves, and are living in many American homes. Violence towards animals usually begins at a young age. There is a well-documented connection between animal cruelty and domestic violence.
Perhaps the most disturbing aspect of this history is how the continuing abuse of cats today can be traced back to that moment. Studies show cats are abused at higher rates than dogs or other domestic animals in almost every category of abuse — beating, throwing, mutilation, drowning.
It's estimated that the lifetime prevalence of animal abuse in US adults is 1.8% according to domestic animal abuse statistics. Research has shown that men are the most likely to abuse animals.

In Australia, around 55,000–60,000 reports of animal mistreatment are made each year to the RSPCA [2], approximately 11,000 of which are made in the state of Victoria [3].
A cat's legs should never dangle, as this can make her feel unsupported and unsafe. When you put your pet back on four legs, always lower her to the floor. A jump from your arms probably won't hurt her, but it won't make her feel supported, either.
Overhead movements or certain noises may frighten an abused cat, triggering a long-term memory of prior trauma. It's possible your cat will carry that unpleasant memory for the rest of his life.
